    1986 Ford 1/2 Ton

Dennis is right on. Those Fords also have a rod that connects the key switch to the electrical switch. The sliding switch is located on the top of the steering column about half-way to the floor. Unbolt the column from the dash and let it drop down and you can get to it.

    What's it worth???

I'd say if you can get $100 for it you're doing pretty well. Ratio would determine how desirable it is. I've got one down in the shed from my 48 F1 that I haven't been able to give away. I pulled mine out for a 9" with a hwy ratio... as have a lot of other guys.

help finding year of tow truck

From what I can see of the grill, it looks like a '55 I'm not as familiar with vins of this era in CAN but did you pull that from the title or a body tag?

    400 to 429

bellhousing yes flywheel no - as I recall 429 and 460 are the same and 460s should be easy to find in a salvage yard.

    ford axles

I don't bother keeping all the codes, but there are a couple things I know. On the front tag, D7TA is the code for a '77 Truck axle. The 350 is the ratio. On a 150 it should be a Dana 44. The rear code tells you the 3L50 is a limited slip 3.50 ratio and the 9 means it's a Ford 9" rear...

    300 Ford engine

I had a new '77 F100 plain jane model with a carbed 300, 3spd that got 15-16 consistently for over 176,000 miles. EFI was a good idea, even if it cuts down on some home repairs and hotrodding.

    ford trans

Beginning in '48 the F6s with the 254 ci six had a 4 spd with synchro'd gears. You need the trans and the half-bell to mate to your '37 engine.

    Vin# location '47 Ford pickup

That body style first appeared in '42, very few civilian trucks during the war until 45. Then civilian production resumed with that body style thru '47. Look on the top of the frame rail, near the steering gearbox or by the front motor mount. From what I've seen it can show up on either frame...

    1950 Ford F1 Transmission

I agree with a lot of what Hal said. But, having run a flathead as a daily driver in a 48 F1 for the past 10 years, they don't overheat if you do your homework. The block and radiator have to be super clean. Timing has to be correct. Do that - no problems. To answer your question, I've...
