Time to wake up after 20 year sleep

Bruce (VA) just posted some great advice about this topic on another message board: Do not attempt to turn the engine over. You could break the rings if they are rusted to the cylinder walls. Pull all plugs, add a tablespoon or so of ATF or MMO in each cylinder. Pull both valve covers & soak...

    OT..sorta...attitude adjustments...life is good!!!

When I was shopping for my first tractor two years ago, it was this site, and others like it, that inspired purchase of an 8N. The knowledge here helped me make it strong and dependable. It is a good tractor for my needs. The neighbors, with their bigger MF's, a Kubota, and a Long, are impressed...

    Oil filter?

If money is really that tight, you'd be better off to leave the oil filter alone and just change the oil. You could also drain the canister. A good oil filter should work through two normal oil changes.

    What is it Worth?

A non-running 8N with decent tires would be worth about $700-$1000 around here. Running... about $1500-$2000. Blade and rake: $200-$300 ea. Of course, condition varies greatly on 60+ year-old tractors and implements. Best to check Craigslist in your area.

8n and big round hay bales.

Bought my 8N from a guy who got rid of it specifically because of its struggle to move round bales.

    I couldn't believe this.

I don't believe 1%, but perhaps 50%. The two 8Ns I've purchased both came with brush hogs attached - one had an ORC and one didn't. The one that didn't was owned by the son of the original purchaser. I wonder when the first ORC was sold? Oh yeah, I use the ORC.

The O'Riely's here is better than Autozone or NAPA at stocking older, uncommon parts.

    12 volt conversion

I had the same problem when first getting my 12 volt 8N. Wiring was a bit helter skelter. I'd say trace the wiring and make a diagram. It will help you understand the advice you will get and the many options you have to rewire your tractor. For instance, I decided to go with a 3-wire alternator...

    1949 8N Story

Congrats on the rebuild! The guy I bought my 48N from got the tractor from his Dad and it was obvious he regretted selling it. The reason was it struggled handling the heavier round hay bales. I get a little nostalgic every time I work it or piddle with it.
