    1948 8n hard to start

My late '47 8N had the same problem when I first bought it 5 yrs. ago. PO had done a half-arsed 12v conversion. Always started great cold but was a PITA once warmed up. Turns out he had installed a dropping resistor in the line to the coil. The coil in fact was a 12v coil & needed no resistor...

    9n ford starter bendix

Dell, when I replaced my crapped out 6v starter a few years ago on my 1947 8n, the new 12v starter came with the new-type bendix, but it kicks out almost as easily as the old type it replaced. Tractor generally starts great but have been wondering if the new hole you mentioned would put more...

    Table saw top

I have refurbished 2 Unisaws, several jointers & my latest is a General 350 cabinet saw. Without surface grinding as you mentioned, there is no way to get the cast iron back to a "fresh from the factory" table. I smooth them up as well as I can using a random orbit sander (after scraping off...

OT Sorta -- Home Built Implements

I have built a bunch of stuff that interchanges between my "47 8N & my 1980 Kubota B7100. Here is a link to another forum showing some pics. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/231728-useful-easy-make-implements.html

    2N hydraulic squirts

Had mine apart a month or so ago for a leak in the same area. Turned out to be a cracked valve chamber probably from water in the sump freezing in the winter. Had an old pump & the only thing any good was the valve chamber I needed.

    axle hub removal help

Right hub on my '47 8N always comes off easily doing the loosen-nut-figure-8 thing. Left hub never does, requires a heavy-duty hydraulic puller & heat with oxy/acet. Both hubs were replaced by a PO & no signs of wear. Used anti-sieze on the splines a year ago & still a PITA when removing this...

    8N's hydraulics drifting down

Mine was like that a year ago. Posted how I replaced piston with the NAA piston, O ring & "leather" back-up washer. Worked great for about 2 months & started leaking again. Tore it down last week (after taking a peek & could see fluid leaking out the mouth of the lift cyl.). Replaced O ring &...

52 8N still smoking, took compression numbers-

Thanks Bob, I understand the oil control ring"s purpose now, but still don"t see how oil can get past the (2) upper compression rings when they seem to be sealing well from his #"s.

52 8N still smoking, took compression numbers-

Seen the "oil control" ring mentioned before on here as a possible cause for a smoking engine & don't understand the reasoning. Isn't it the bottom ring on the piston & constructed the way it is to carry oil up the cylinder walls for lubrication? Looks like they don't do much for compression &...

    oil pressure

With 50 lbs. oil pressure @ startup, I bet somebody severely stretched the spring on the relief valve. Owner's manual states 27 lbs. at 3/4 throttle.

    TO 35 Struts

I took a couple of washers with a large hole, concaved them with a large socket for an anvil & a ball peen hammer. I removed the cap on the radius rod end & inserted my "shim" & bolted the cap back on (making sure the "shim" wasn't too thick & no danger breaking the cap as it was tightened...

1955 Massey Harris Pacer - Value?

I have a 1955 Massey Harris Pacer, built in Toronto, Canada. Apparently they only built app. 2,900 of these from '54 to '57. I need to sell it this Spring when we get moved to the cottage. Sheet metal is good (c/w side panels), some surface rust, no dents, paint is faded & not original...

6 volt pos or neg ground?

Spark plugs are out aren't they? Turning over by hand, excess ATF or MMO shouldn't hurt anything & is probably a good idea.

    Hard starting 8N

My '47 8N acted like that when I first bought it 2yrs. ago. It was a botched up 12v conversion by a previous owner & further complicated by the next one. Turns out it had a 12v front mount coil & the guy I bought it from thought it was 6v & added the extra dropping resistor. The tractor always...
