    1949 8N Story

Over the past year I have been rebuilding my fathers (gone many years now) Ford 8N. My father rebuilt the engine many years ago and, according to my brother, did not use the tractor much after the engine rebuild. Thus, I did not feel it necessary to rebuild the engine--or even check if it...

    Radius Rods again

I agree with Mr. Smith: If the old radius rods and the new radius rods are the same length logic dictates that they should fit even if one or more components are bent--since it all fit together before being disassembled it should all fit back together. If nothing else has changed it almost has...

    Whats the problem

Interesting, I'm new to the whole thing thus not aware of the past political issues. I note that the original question (about governor rebuild) is gone this morning...what's with that? I emailed the original poster and he did not take it down.

    Whats the problem

I have been trying to answer a question about governor rebuild by sending the questioner info on another site...a non profit tractor club site. When I try to post the message it is simply dropped. Is it because this site sponsor will not allow any mention of another site?? Just curious....

    Thank you very much.

    voltage regulator

49 8N, front mount, six volt. New wiring harness (correctly installed), generator rebuilt working fine. Voltage regulator lasted about two minutes, field cut out is open, no charge. Are there problems with the voltage regulators?? If so, any source of good ones??? Thank you in advance.

    Throttle, governor, carb adjustment

Al: As I understand your question the throttle appears to be improperly adjusted vis a vis the throttle to governor rod (the governor link rod). If that is the question the I&T shop service manual FO-4 has the answer on page 43 paragraph 58 complete with photographs. It covers the rod, the...

    rear axle housings

Given the problems with the rear axle seals of the early model 8n"s (leaking oil onto the brakes etc.); Can the rear axle housings of the early 8n"s be replaced with the axle housings from a later model that contain an inner oil seal??

    ignition switch wiring

The wiring diagram shows the ignition switch with a red wire (green stripe) and a yellow wire. Yellow wire runs to the power distribution point on the resistor block and the red runs to one side of the resistor. My starter switch has black and yellow wires....am I correct in assuming that black...

    engine paint?

Exhaust components can be powder coated with a high temperature coating that will not burn off. Somewhat expensive though.

    ford 9n hard start

The starter disengaging early is a symptom of a bad starter drive.

    Radiator fan shroud

The radiator that I have is 16"wide by 24"tall by 3" thick --obtained locally---and identical to the one that came off of the tractor (with the exception that this one does not leak like a sieve). The fan shroud is apparently not going to fit without cutting some of the lower half of the shroud...

    Just 8 ns

Will be calling them on Friday. Renovating my father's 8N and have purchased nearly all of my parts from them. Great service and the parts actually fit. Bought some from another company early on and now having to replace them because the "new"ones don't fit...apparently the Chinese cannot...

    Harry Wilken-gas tank

The gas tank looks great--how did you clean up and finish the exterior? If you sealed the interior, how did you accomplish that without plugging the interior portion of the vent? Thank you.

    Axle Hub lock nut

The hubs and axle are perfectly flush. However, I am rebuilding the tractor and the old nuts are shot, thought that I would give something new a try---in the hope that sometimes new is actually better... Bruce: A question and comment: Your 50 tips--thank you, invaluable. Regarding the amount...
