    520 Steering Gear Disassembly

I don't remember how to separate these pieces. I know it has something to do with the dowels but I don't remember how to get it apart. My manuals are at a friends house who is out of state for a few days. Anyone here know?

    520 Power Steering Issues

Ok so the fact that it goes to full lock by itself or with a flip of the wheel is a pretty good indication that is wrong then? That might be a large part of my problems with this....

    520 Power Steering Issues

Yes I may kick myself for honing the valve housing. But the valve was scored & stuck in the bore...wouldn't slide freely even after a good cleaning. I think I talked to Rich at one point about buying a reproduction early serial number worm gear and some reproduction ventilator fan to p/s pump...

    breaking rusted joints

I found a study a college did studying the torque required to break rusted fasteners loose after being soaked with different penetrants. Kroil was good but the best was a 50/50 mix of ATF & acetone. Worked great to break the engine loose in the 520 I redid. Oxalic acid is also very effective...

    Yes that is tight.

    520 Power Steering Issues

I disassembled the worm gear, cleaned everything, and then read in the manual that I was supposed to have taken a measurement before disassembly to then use to reassemble the worm gear assembly. I don't remember exactly how I did it but I tried to follow the tech manual as closely as possible...

    520 Power Steering Issues

I'm working on a 520 and the power steering isn't quite right. I've gone through the system 100% so everything has been rebuilt. The worm gear is a late serial number version. When the tractor is first started it'll sometimes spin the wheels to full lock left OR right without touching the...

John Deere 60 will not start with Pertronix ignition.

I'm going to second Bob's answer. If it doesn't crank than you have a problem with the battery, battery cables, starter, or starter switch. The distributor wiring will make no difference. Now if it is cranking over and won't fire than that could be the Pertronix or coil wiring.

Optimal spark plug gap for JD 60 with electronic ignition

On classic cars I often see an improvement in idle quality with a Pertronix EI & coil over points & a standard coil. Without a dyno it is hard to tell when you are going down the road though. For a tractor like what you are working on I'd bet there is a bit of an improvement but it may not be...

Nearing end of '57 520 restoration

I know exactly what you are talking about. Then in the end you still hear complaints about cost. Not so much this customer but certainly others.

Nearing end of '57 520 restoration

I stumbled across a mix on a powder coating forum that matches pretty good. It is 50% RAL Grass Green and 50% John Deere Green (the new color). Unfortunately I ran into a lot of variation in shades of the Classic Green that was purchased from a JD dealer. I had a friend fix & paint the...

Nearing end of '57 520 restoration

Thank you for the compliments! I haven't added up the billed hours or expenses & I had a LOT of hours that I didn't bill for. I built a 4x4x6ft oven so I did the frame & everything smaller. The cast wheels, rims, & steering shaft were done by a local fabrication place and I painted the...

Nearing end of '57 520 restoration

Yes this tractor is owned by a gentleman (Marvin) who is 93...it was the first new tractor he bought. I'm friends with his grandson who asked me to work on it. Marvin wanted to see the tractor run again before he passes. The family unveiled it at a family wedding about 4 months ago but it...

Nearing end of '57 520 restoration

Thank you for the compliments. After all the hours I spent searching online for pictures of how things were supposed to be put together & the help I received on this forum I was hoping it would be useful to some. I have more pictures not posted but those are mainly reference pics I took during...
