    John Deere 2640

I forgot to mention. The hyd pump had seized up which is why I was hired to replace it. Now I suspect the transmission pump may have been the originator of the problem.

    John Deere 2640

That's kind of what I figured. I suspected that not only was the wrong hyd oil used, but there are other more serious problems. Either way, I'm running away as fast as I can. LOL

    John Deere 2640

Thank you folks. I had replaced the hdy pump on this for my neighbor not more than 6 months ago (heavy little bugger that pump). Now, he lent it out to a bonehead who said the hydraulics were working slow and seemed to be some strange noise coming from the rearend. When I went to look at it and...

    John Deere 2640

Does anyone know if a JD 2640 uses a common hyd system? I found the hydraulic dipstick lurking behind one of the pedals and it reads full. However, I hear some grinding noise coming from the rear end. I know the fill cap is in the rear of the tractor. I don't know if there's another place to...

    rotary cutter

A friend recently passed away (sad, so young, 44) and his dad asked me to help him sell some of his stuff. He has a WD45 and sitting by the house is this cutter. I think it was meant for the WD45, but, I'm not sure. Does anyone know if it's designed for the AC or not. His dad thinks it was, but...

    4600 hyd lever

Sure wish I could find a picture of the lever with part number 83932589. (sigh) I already bought the one #D3NNB936A... not even close. So far, every where I look, it's unavailable and there isn't a picture anywhere so I could be sure. The lever in the diagram looks like the correct one, but...

Does anyone know the part number for this lever (arrow) on my 4600 Ford tractor? Tired of using vise grips. LOL

    4600 steering

Ok, so I finally got all the little balls back in the steering and buttoned up the old girl. hooked the bush hog and cut along my road for about 20 minutes and "poof" the side gasket blew. I had cleaned, checked for straight and torqued the bolts to the 40 ft lbs as per the manual. Looking...

    The 4600 steering saga continues

Oh yeah. after going away from the tractor and calming down, I wandered back out and thought, oh well. let's try one more time. Success! for who knows why, everything just went back together (like I knew what I was doing) :D Just finished the last of the seals, and all I have to do is...

    The 4600 steering saga continues

Now I'm confused. I thread in the shaft, feeding balls in the tube as the shaft goes in. 20 of the balls go in and the other 8 sit in the feed tube. It's only when I try to put the top of the feed tube on that the 1 or 2 of the balls fall out. Are you sticking the balls to the worm shaft and...

    The 4600 steering saga continues

I should clarify. I have been using Vaseline to hold the balls. Now, I'm wondering if I should use a general purpose grease.

    The 4600 steering saga continues

Well, after lot's of cussing, I finally got all the sheet metal, steering wheel, fuel tank, and all the other assorted pieces off the tractor. Followed the IT manual re-sealed, and started to re-assemble. Now, as per the manual... feed in the 28 bearing balls using clean grease. Install the...

    4600 steering issue

not sure... I just looked down and saw it running off the top of the trans and down off the right side. that would be the opposite side of the Pittman arm. I suppose that would be the cover gasket or possibly the banjo fitting. not sure I can run it now with all the stuff I had to remove to get...

    4600 steering issue

Thank you to Sean and Shaun. The parts drawing is what I was looking for. One thing I have learned after 35+ years as a heavy equipment mechanic is never think I know it all and never be afraid to ask for guidance from others who may be better informed. :D I was bush hogging and I felt the...
