Ford 9n late valve timing

Good afternoon
I’m missing something so I thought I’d give a shout out
I have a 2N 12 volt converted that has a skip ignition miss and 13 1/2 inches of Vacuum with 1/2 inch of quiver
I have taken a compression test all cylinders are above 123 to 125.
I’ve thrown parts at it with no change distributor, copper wires , non-resistor plugs different carburetors
From what I’m understanding, I may have a timing gear that is off, causing late valve timing vacuum readings
Please help
 
Hello MAPeetz, welcome to YT! A couple of guys on here tout diagnosis of gas engine problems with a vacuum gauge. The first thing you need is a diagnostic list that say x symptom or engine problem will cause the vacuum gauge to react in x manner. Then in my opinion you need a couple more things. You need to have a fairly good set of engine diagnostic skills, meaning if you didn’t have the vacuum gauge you should still be able to diagnose the problem. Lastly you need experience reading a vacuum gauge, meaning ideally you work as a mechanic (old school for this purpose) and you’re connecting your vacuum gauge to several engine a week that have some problem and then you experience what the gauge said and then add that knowledge to the use of the vacuum gauge. Maybe you are the guy that can check those last two things, my guess if you were you wouldn’t need to come to a forum to ask about diagnosing your problems.

Let’s pick this apart a bit. Give us a little better definition of what this means. How are you coming to this conclusion? Which cylinder(s) do this? Have you did a “cut out test” by removing spark from plugs one by one to determine which ones have a problem. Have you tested your spark with a gap tester set at a 1/4”, was the result satisfactory? Only 50 years
The vacuum charts are all the same and were created in the 20s and the principal is the same and is the same in the Factory manuals
The theory is basic
I guess what I’m looking for is some way of verifying that my timing gear )which apparently there are two marks on it) isnt on the wrong mark and what are the characteristics of this
From all indications with 13 inches of Vacuum fairly steady with equal normal compression the historic vacuum charts indicate “ late valve timing”
Any personal history of this problem please help

A degree wheel would tell you for certain if valve timing is off with out taking part of engine apart It would take a bit to time to find TDC and then to find exactly when valve begins to open . You won't need a real degree wheel just the diameter of front crank pulley,make your marks on that.
 
I got a few minutes and look further into it and apparently the Bakelite cam gear with the aluminum center has a tendency to shift, causing timing issues

You can use number 4 cylinder valve overlap to check your cam timing. Watch the lifters/valves on number 4 as the exhaust closes the intake will begin to open. Turn the engine till both the I & E lifters are at an even height, at this point your TDC timing mark should be within 5 degrees of 0. Why do you think the cam timing could be off, recent motor work?
 
Used red info will work on a good runner its called "on the rock" if timing is in question it will not confirm the piston is at TDC. If you would like to be absolutely sure pull the cylinder head. If the cam gear is a composite gear it will break free near the inner circle where it bolts to the cam. It will have a bit of free play remove the governor and work the crank back and forth looking for free play in the cam.

Back to on the rock. Checking like used red suggest are my link can confirm the cam gear is lose.
