    TO30 Losing Power.. Puzzling

A big THANK YOU to all who offered their expertise and opinions and advise on my problem. An extremely big [b:3d9e7f6589]THANK YOU[/b:3d9e7f6589] to JohnUK for his persistence in emailing and sending me documentation specific to my tractor and my problem. Update: Changed out the condenser...

    TO30 Losing Power.. Puzzling

Finally got my voltage tester back from my father, so now have some numbers to report. Owned this tractor for 5 years and never had to do much electrical work on it. Whoever owned it before and converted it..... well..... it's interesting. Maybe needs a full re-wiring this winter, but for...

    TO30 Losing Power.. Puzzling

Update: Turned into a "Honey-Do" day yesterday, and I wasn"t able to do much work on the tractor. Did stop by the store and pick up a new condenser though. Installed it this am, and tractor started, but idled very slow, no response to throttle, and belching black smoke. After a few minutes...

    TO30 Losing Power.. Puzzling

Thanks to all for the input. Gonna get working on tractor here shortly and will report back later. To update some of the things I have tried and forgot to list: I removed the drain plug on bottom of carb and it runs out steady and hard. Partial choke, or any choke, kills it immediately...

    TO30 Losing Power.. Puzzling

'53 TO30 12V Neg Ground Been running tractor right along this year: plowing snow in winter, plowing garden in spring, running brush hog in summer. During brush hogging, tractor seemed to be wanting in the power department, but I chalked it up to extra high, extra thick grass. Took half...

    Lift Control Lever

Got a bit of snow today, fired up the TO30 and got ready to plow. The "fingerip" Lift Control Lever, (the lever to lift and lower the blade) was stuck. I gave a little bit more of a pull and freed it up. Unfortunately, I freed the lever into 2 pieces. It broke just above where it bolts onto the...

    8n front mount distributor

This message is a reply to an archived post by Tom N MS on May 15, 2008 at 16:00:49. The original subject was "Re: 8n front mount distributor". Can the shaft be off by 180 degrees? Or will this affect the proper firing of the plug in the cycle? We had to replace a condenser in a front mount...

    Update on starting woes

When my starter was acting like yours, I took it off and right up to the local rebuilder's shop. They bench tested it right there and were able to tell me whether or not the starter itself was bad. Sure enough mine was, they rebuilt it and it runs like new now.

    OT: IE vs Firefox

I've been using FF for over 3 years now and love it much more than IE. Lately, IE has been shutting down unexpectedly on me, and since I usually have multiple tabs open, been costing me alot of time and alot of work. I also now use Opera alot and it is very fast and efficient. The one...

    Split Guide Valves on 2N

Thanks. I just found pix online of the 2 different tappets (adjustable vs non adjustable). We do have the adjustable ones. Turns out Father in law has the FO4, gonna pick that up this afternoon. Will keep your info handy Hobo, thanks for the phone offer, may take you up on that in the...

    Split Guide Valves on 2N

I found this part online (thanks) but..... it is a solid O ring, just like the ones sold here for the solid body guide. With the dividers in the grooves of the split guide, I can't see how this part would work. Wouldn't the "exposed" part of the seal either pull the rest out of the groove...

    Split Guide Valves on 2N

Thanks to all for their input and advice. Back to the question..... should I have been able to just pull the valve/guide out by hand, or should I have needed a valve puller? The intake is suspect, because during starting, I am getting serious blowback thru the carb, blowing gas (alot) thru...

    Split Guide Valves on 2N

One site advertised "valve locks" for sale, looked like horseshoe pieces that would fit, but not sure if they are different from the valve stem "keepers". (No description or size included).

    Split Guide Valves on 2N

Been working on my Dad's 2N front mount (won't start issue). Found low compression in #3 hole. Pulled the head and found everything to be in "visibly OK" order. Got some recommendations to inspect the intake valve in question and also the guide. Pulled the suspect and found out that he...

    Dad's 2N Update

There is a nut on the lifter, that I assume would be an "adjuster". From my online research, it seems that there is a difference between the solid guide and the split guide in the springs that they use. My thinking (correct me if I'm wrong), is that I would need to go with: valves, solid...

    Dad's 2N Update

OK, got a chance to look some more at the valves on Dad's N. Got some recommendations to inspect the intake valve in question and also the guide. Pulled the suspect and found out that he has a mushroom type valve with split guide. Once the top and bottom retaining clips were pulled, the valve...

    Dad's 2N Update

This is why I wish my post would get moved to the front..... I did do the compression test before I took the head off, it was number 3. The others were reading 85# and 3 was odd man out at 15#. Thanks for the help.

    Dad's 2N Update

Not sure why my post doesn't come to the front when I add to it......... so here's an update: Back again for an update, some advice, and whatever scolding and tongue lashing I'm due for this time........ Knowing now that I'm working on a flathead........ I pulled off the side covers and...
