    Did you turn the mag by hand until it snapped and then mount it. You need to hold the lug still in the exact position it snapped.

    Based on the subject line, I would carefully look over the linkage from the governor to the Carb. Make sure there is nothing binding and that it is set properly @ 1/2 hole short.

    This should work for you.... Magneto Timing for John Deere L & LA tractors : 1. Loosen the timing cover to see inside timing hole. 2. Remove the mag dist. cap. 3. Turn engine clockwise slowly until you hear the impulse trip. Stop. 4. Then turn slightly counter clockwise until you see the spark...
