I've got a 1950 John Deere B and I just bought a 10 ft disc for it. Some guys say it should be ok and a few others say It will be to big for my tractor to pull. Any thoughts ?
 
We pull a 12 ft disc with 22" blades with a 120hp fwd Deere on hilly ground at 6-8 inches deep and probably wouldn't want any more disc in some conditions. This is always in ground that has been plowed first.
 
Don't think a B will pull it. A--- B needs a 6' or 7'(at best) if its a finishing disk.
 
You've got the tractor and you've got the disk, so try them; what have you got to lose? Lots of differences in disks and in soil types. Around here (in the early '50s), a B was typically matched with a 6 ft disk.
 
In this neck of the woods a B would pull a 10 foot disc around the farm yard, maybe. 7 or 8 feet would be plenty in good ground and then it would be a slow job. I like an 86 hp turbodiesel pulling 12 feet and its all it wants. In really good ground it takes a gear lower than optimum to keep the tractors from overheating.
 
The only way to know is to try it out. We had a Allis Chalmer B with a 7 foot AC tandem disk and four 4x4 peg harrows. My Grandfather had a Mccormick 10-20 with a 10A disk and four peg harrows.
Occasionally you would run into problems, but you learn where it works and where it doesnt.
 
First question is what make and model, so many variations impossible to guess on. A 10' could be a light finnishing disk that at that time would have been called a heavy disk, then there are the newer heavier disks that are designed to cut 8" deep in heavy unworked ground.

Second question is what type of ground do you have and will the ground be plowed ahead of your disking?

An older one in the light finnishing class in unworked ground like bean or corn stalks on any type of ground it should handle it as you would only on first pass be cutting perhaps 2" deep and second pass 3" and 4th pass 4". Now if the ground is fall plowed you could probably handle it the same as on the unworked ground and that would be second gear. On spring plowed ground it is already soft and just driving thru the field will take a lot of the power you have, if you can get enough traction so if it would work you would be down in first gear at the speed or less than a horse walks, the disk will work at that speed but not as good as in 3rd or 4th but will work. The proper size for that tractor would be a disk that measures 7 1/2' on the back gang and a lot are 6 blades per gang or a lighter disk with 7 blades per gang on 8' rear gang width. And in plowed ground you should be able to pull it in 3rd gear and on unplowed ground or set for a finnishing pass then 4th gear. The 6' sizes said would be proper for the 1946 and down all fuel tractors with about 20 MAX PTO HP where you should have 28 MAX PTO HP and that is where all the pressed frame B's should be unless you have an all fuel model. Mine was a 49 and that is the disk sizes I pulled with it but I did have a couple of 7 blade disks that measured 8' 8" across the rear for the 1950 AR and 1951 A tractors at 38 MAX PTO HP. and I did pull them a few times. I also did pull the 7' 6" JD KBA drag disk with the 1946 B on very rough spring plowed ground and I also pulled a 7 blade model once but had to be in first gear but first in that tractor is equal in speed to second in your tractor, The 1945 & 1946 tractors had a high speed tranny in them.
