1020 head on 1440

Switching from a 820 to a 1020 head and I don't have a manual for the 1020 yet. Tried it for the first time yesterday and it digs in the dirt. I tipped face plate on the feeder house back one hole, but now feeder house chain is too long, so I couldn't try it. Will need to get half links monday. Are there any other adjustments that can be made to keep it from digging? Thanks.

Do you have the Auto Header Control hooked up?

If I remember right you have to change a few things for the header control to work when putting a 1020 on a 1440.

Assuming you"ve got the same potentiometer on the 1020-----assuming the pivot rods and the cable are free----assuming the header height control is working on the combine-- the 1020 tends to drop the guards forward as you lift the head. With or without polys as you lower the head the guards will flatten out. Make sure the pads are all as flat as they should be and the leaf springs are all adjusted properly. Dividers need to be adjusted as well to maintain their balance. That said what"s digging?

digging as in it digs into the ground (the head) and mixes dirt in with the beans

I don't use the header control. 1440 is a 1979 so no electric over hydraulic. Ran the 820 for years manually with no problems. Figure the 1020 should work the same if I run it mid range on the gauge on right hand end of head.

Cutter bar was picking up some dirt.It seemed the right hand end of the head by the divider was the worst. It was cutting the beans very short, flush with the ground. Angle of back of head was 12 deg. I was told should be 10 deg. Moved face plate back one hole and I will check when I get head back on. Guessing it will be less than 10 deg.

Can't imagine not using header control since your machine has the capability. A 1020 will work on the early models just need to get a cable and hook it to the float control rather than using the potentometer output. Neighbor uses a 1020 with header control on his old 1440 which replaced an 815 and doesn't have any problem. The first year he ran the old 810 head and it wasn't a great success.

I'm sure you are right about the header control. My combine actually came with a after market header control that has a box you mount on the head. I was told they work better than the factory ones. With less than 50 acres of beans each year and a job in town, it seems the header control is one of the things I never take the time to mess with. Probably why I don't like combining beans after dark.

Bet I've got the same aftermarket system on my low hour 1480. Bought it directly from the farmer that developed and sold the package, but it was tough for him to dig up enough parts because that market has dried up a long time ago. Believe he went to the local salvage yard and had to remove the main solenoid valve from a salvage machine to complete the package. It does work better than the factory system, and no problems running at night. Reacts noticeably faster, but you loose the ability to vary the running height which the old system allows. But everyone wants to "shave the ground to get every last bean so the ability to increase the running height isn't a feature most would use. Might be an advantge in muddy conditions if the surface has trouble supporting the head and it tends to plow. Neighbor with the 1440 watched it work and liked the results. However he is in his mid-eighties and isn't real fond of electronics. So he gets by with the old factory arrangement and the newer 1020 head. Certainly can understand if you didn't install it or have any information on the setup, it would probably be a daunting task.
