Guess Ill start over for convenience; the shop mechanic came out last night and decided the regulator was no good; so he took it off and took it in and replaced the regulator- he just showed up and we put it back on the tractor; he says it is working but I say not right. When we start it at 1000rpm the meter shows 12.6V...at the regulator; we stood there for atleast 5 minutes and watched it gain voltage .10 at a time until it reached 13.30V...and thats the highest it went. Why would it slowly gain voltage? Also I still think the Field terminal should blink a test-light while charging but it never does...more to ponder on:)

Never saw a 3 brush 12 volt generator on a 1030. The 3 brush were most always 6 volt. Is the 3rd brush adjustable? If so move it closer to the hot brush and that will increase output.

ains voltage because battery is charging.

The regulator will keep the fields grounded till the voltage gets to the point that enough magnetism is present on the coil that controls the contacts spring tension to overcome the spring tension then the contact will start to vibrate at the set voltage tension to control voltage at that point. You will not see any voltage on that terminal till the regulator points start to open to control voltage by breaking the field circuit to stop voltage rise. Quit looking for field terminal voltage, the terminal where the field windings connect inside the generator ( the 12 ARM brush output to regulator) is where you should see field voltage, the other end is grounded to complete the field circuit. You should be looking at a minimum of 14 V once the batteries are fully charged, you will not see regulated voltage till the battery voltage gets up to the regulators voltage setting. I guess I missed something, if it is a 3 brush generator they never used them on any 12 V system that I know of.

so If you hook a volt meter to batterys when charging- it shouldnt read 13.4 or 14.2 right off the bat? Hmmmm....

nly if battery is already fully charged.

This is how he left my regulator; Left post is Field wire; center post is a wire from bottom of regulator and wire going to
batteries; right post is nothing. Thanks

I can't read lettering on terminals?? What do you mean 'coming from bottom of VR? A 4th terminal? Labeled what? Where is ARM of gen tied?

Right is field.
Center is battery wire.
Left is empty [not used].
Armature wire is under regulator and idiot light wire hooks on there also.
With the battery wire unhooked make sure you have battery voltage at that wire. If you dont you have a bad connection somewhere.

ery good. Notice that he has a second wire coming off the BATT terminal.

I am familiar with the regulators that have the 4th terminal underneath the regulator and have never seen it used in that tractors application, not to say it wouldn't work. The Idiot light wire would go on with the armature wire, AS JMOR said, you will only see 14 V or whatever regulated voltage is, (that can vary between regulators) if the batts are full charge. If you want to see regulated voltage the batteries must be fully charged and a little time allowed after startup to replace amps used to start. Normal float voltage on good batteries is about 12.6 so you can expect that after an overnite or a period of sitting not run. it may take a period of time after startup to get the regulators set regulated cutoff voltage ( the volts where charge volts cease to rise and stabilize).

he way I see it is that in not utilizing the L terminal makes the reg function just just like more modern 3 terminal regulators. I really wonder why they ever existed?

sorry my computer was HAcked 2 days ago and had to take it to computer shop...what a bad deal. So Im back; yes the middle terminal
is the ARM terminal and has both wires on it...that go forward to charge the batteries; nothing on the Batt terminal; I guess it
will work....thanks guys!

have my doubts. If as you say, the battery should discharge into the generator armature!

id you read the labels stamped into the terminals?

The BATT terminal must have the wire that has voltage in it from the tractor hooked up to it or charging voltage has no where to go. The ARM terminal will have the armature wire and the idiot light wire on it. The BATT terminal has a cutout relay that disconnects the generator when the engine is not running,If it is not used the current has no way to get to the batteries. As I stated before I have never seen that style regulator used in your application , but for sure the Light terminal will have nothing hooked to it

No sorry I didnt read as HE put n the new regulator and made the comment this is a different style regulator...whatever that
meant! And yes it makes sense nothing on the L terminal; the blue wire you see is one I replaced years ago that goes forward and
thru the engine compartment and hooks to the starter solenoid; I presume to charge the batteries.; The other tapped wire is really
orange and goes forward also- both wires are attached together in the center terminal and both wires have battery voltage with key
off. Thanks.

On my 830 i believe that original taped wire went to a circuit breaker on the gas tank support, you were wise to put another wire directly to the starter, when I upgrade to an alternator I always add a heavy 8 Ga wire directly to the starter and let the original in place as well. doesn't the 1030 have a channel bolted to the block below the heads to hold the wires?
