How 'common' is it to shear the key on the MCV pump? Bitterly cold and 303 (heavy) oil.

No steering, brakes, TA or clutch assist. Rear pump and PTO are working okay.

we've got 806, 706, 986 here- all the same pump though- i've never heard of shearing the key, but i guess there's a first for everything.

sure you didn't lose prime? try the extra 5 gal trick?

remember it's the return flow from those functions you don't have that lubes the trans and diff.

or is the mcv pump worn, filter too restrictive, and the hitch pump is getting all the oil? maybe try running for a couple min without a filter in the housing and open up that fitting on the mcv housing to help it prime?

I"ve never heard of that one Allen but anything is possible I guess. I hope you get her figured out. It sucks dealing with equipment problems in the bitter cold. Good luck!

If that filter and/or screen were to be plugged, would the hitch pump still work but yet starve the MCV for oil?

Everything was working just fine when I shut it off the night before. The sub-zero temps hit and the next morning no functions on the front pump.

I got the PTO to finally work after putting a space heater on her belly.

Check the filter first? Been a long time since I've changed it; Probably 4 or 6 years anyway.

Yep rear hitch pump will work and the MCV pump will be the last to suck . Do you have the hy Tran in it ?? and are you running it over full ?? with a loader on a tractor you need to be over full . When was the last time you had a new MCV pump installed , when was the last time anybody was in the MCv and did a rebuild?? And plus the fact that it is freeking COLD out your way . Wrap a tarp around that tractor from the top of the hood to the ground and half way around the back and stuff a space heater blowing under the back half . It will take a good while to warm her up as you have a lot of COLD iron to warm up and a lot of oil to warm . We did this back in 77 when temps around here dropped to minus 35 and the neighbors 766 froze up and it was in a three sided pole barn . We took one of our old steel hauling tarps and wrapped the tractor and stuffed a 150000 BTU space heater behind it and in about three hours she was cooking . Just don't do what one guy did and placed the bottom third of a 55 gal. drum under his 1066 and put baler twine and diesel fuel in it and lit it and shoved it under the rear end . sure made for a hot time in the old town . Lost the tractor and pole barn.

Why does it have HEAVY oil in it and not Hytrans?

My bad.

Trying to save money. Was going to add some oil to 'er couple of days ago and that damned 303 wouldn't even run out of the bucket.

Can't get a filter for 'er today so will try that route next week.

Water and ice in the bottom of the oil? Condensation can be bad at times. When you pulled the plug, any ice or just the oil? We had a 656 several years ago that we had to drain a little water from the hydraulic system each fall or we had problems.

Not much difference, 303 meets hytran specs. Hytran is the equivalent of SAE 10 weight, 303 is 20.

we always used charcoal to heat the dozer and semis if we needed to in the winter just make a pile and when it burns down to hot coals shovel them under

Yeahbut,

Try to pour some of that 303 when it's below zero...it acts just like grease.

Works great in the summertime tho.

Allan , My 706 gos through the samething about every winter when the cold gets here . I change the filter and it has always fixed it . I hope it works for you .

If you have FARMALLS then you need a half dozen filters setting around . And if you like your T/A don't start messen with your hyd. oil . In other words ya did a self inflicted gun shot wound to the foot . YOUR BAD.

I just changed my 706 hydraulic filter before the cold snap and it made a world of difference on how well the MCV pump is working. Cold days used to take 3-5 min of running before the MCV kicked in (even 5 gal overfull). Now it works on start up even in the cold weather. The screen was very clogged on mine.
