1070 batteries

I need batteries for the 10. I know more CCA'a are better but I have also saw where they put more in the same sized batteri cas and they don't stand up as well. The question I have is if the group 31 batteries at 950cca are needed in a cold climate (mn) or are the 30H's at 650 cca adequate. Also I don't have much confidence in Interstate anymore. I have priced JD, Case local farm store and napa. What brand has been giving good service?

Last battery I bought for my 970 was the biggest 12 volt that would fit in the box. It was an Exide and came from Wal Mart, had 1000 CCA ,I only installed one battery and it lasted 11 years. I used the terminal spray on the connections and I did not have the battery box open once in the 11 years. Same thing in the 2090, 930, 830, 830, 870, and 2 in the W14 for 24V. I have never had one that did not make the 7 year warranty. DK

No substitute for CCA's. Compare closely. Either CCAs' @ 0 degrees F. or 32 degrees F. One supplier will have a higher number for the same battery because it's rated @ 32 degrees, & not 0 degrees. Amp hours also come into play.

As does vibration resistance. 70 series tractor aren't nearly as hard on them as tractors that put their battery out in the nose where they get bounced more.

Car batteries aren't a good choice for tractors even if they have the CCAs.

That said, who makes the batteries for Deere or Fiat? Exide? Deka?

Exide HP31's @925CCA can be had for $100 if you shop around a bit.

Just wondering whats wrong with Interstate bat? Where I retired from they used Interstate bats, and put them in all their trucks, backhoes, and skids. I have 1 that is 9yrs , and 1 that is 7 yrs still good. Dave

Doug,

I have had really good luck with CaseIH batterys and also Fleet Farm (here in WI). Have had some problems with batterys from Batterys Plus. Very high CCA but don't last very long. I put 2 1100 CCA batterys from BP in my 930, and you could weld with that positive cable, but they were only good for 3 years. Don

Dave, Of course this is a self answering question but how many years ago were your 7 and 9 year old Interstates made? Some friends that own repair shops and sell interstate's have told me several times that Interstate failures have been up dramatically the past 2 years. Yes they used to give excellent service, 7-8 years was not uncommon but it sounds like after getting the market cornered Interstate has taken the manufacturing out of the US and quality has declined. My 10 had 30h batteries in it, might be the path I go.

I have 2 30H's in the 2390 and they work fine even during the winter. That said my 1070, 2090, and 2394 all have 31s. There isn't much difference in price between the 30H and 31 so I've been going with the bigger batteries.

I just replaced the 31s in my 2090 back in October. The batteries that were in it were John Deere (bought the tractor used a few years ago). Called around, 31s were $96 from Case and $150 from JD. Bought the Case batteries. They appeared to be identical to the ones from JD with the exception of the label so they are evidently manufactured by the same company. I think you could buy the batteries cheaper at a farm/fleet store but the Case batteries had a better warranty so that's the way I went.

My understanding is,the higher cca batts have more plates in them so they are closer together @ warp @ short out quicker than a lower cca battery. On my 18 wheeler i use interstate 750 cca.last ones went over 6 years , but it has 4 batteries.

On the Interstate experience. I purchased 3 interstates (4 if you count the lawn mower) from our local creamery. All 850cca with 72 month warranties. 2 of the 3 did not go 2 years, and the 3rd will not pass a cold cranking test today. I, too, have had excellent luck with Interstate in years past but not recently and it's not worth the hassle. With both of the failed batteries, I had to wait a week for the truck to come thru to get satisfaction. I'm not alone, I don't think they've sold a battery in the past year. Word travels quickly.

Not sure who did the cold cranking test but the GM side of the shop is my best supplier for the batteries for my tractor. I have about 40 tractors now with good batteries and some other vehicles because the auto service dept. tester says they were bad. HECK I have one in my wood hauler now for 4 years. Do a hydrometer test to see if the battery is actually bad. The techs on the farm side have been getting batteries for their equipment also.
