1086 Torque Amplifier

If the the tractor is in gear and wont move in high or low range can the torque amplifier cause the tractor not to move ?

yes. If the TA planetary gears are stripped it will not move. Also if the sprague (one way) clutch for the TA is slipping (No TA reduction when the lever is back, just a false neutral, and the hydraulic pressure from the MCV system is gone, or the Front clutch in the TA is toast it will not move. It takes both the one way and front clutch to be out for it to be blamed. Jim

hydraulic TAs like in 1086 don't have planetaries. that's the older mechanical ones (MTA,400,656, etc)

possible for both the sprag and TA lockup clutch to be out, but i'd be leaning more toward main clutch problems.

Thank you for your response .I have a friend that has this tractor , he told me that it would not work in low range and not long after it quit working in low range the tractor quit moving totally. I was raised on International tractors and was taught the torque amplifier should only be used when slowing down to turn and for taking off but not to be used in a long term application

The tractor was given to me Ive been looking for a larger tractor ,its sat for 6 years Im leaning towards moving it home and splitting it in half and see where I stand

easy first step is to remove the bottom cover under the flywheel. (2) 3/8 bolts if i remember. it's a flat steel rectangle. the top side of it probably has some oily dirt on it, if there are also little pieces of coil springs, that means the clutch disk has the hub stripped out of it. only 5 minutes to check that.

if it lost the low side first, then the high side, it might be a TA/hydraulic issue. if the main clutch looks OK, next guess is that the sprag has been out of the TA for a while, and the MCV system and/or TA clutches are now weak enough that they won't pull.

even with NO hydraulics, the tractor should be able to move itself in TA low.

I bought a 706 a few years ago that woulden't move. The owner was sure the TA was out, so I brought it home, tapped the dump valve with a hammer, it went back in and the tractor worked fine after that.

Gentelmen I appreciate your information soons as it drys up around here ( No. California )I think I will take the risk and get it . Probaly be back later for more info. Thank you again
