1175 PTO

Hello, I have an 1175 that has some issues with the pto. I tried using it for the first time and it did not have power to keep in turning when I hit thick grass. After I got it home I determined that the cable adjustment was way off and not moving the spool valve nearly enough. I hooked in a gauge and dead ended the line from the flow divider. At idle I have about 165 psi and at 1500 rpm or pto speed I have 195 psi which is about right according to the book. I need another fitting to be able to see if it holds that pressure with the pto hooked up. The brake that keeps the pto from turning seems to be worn because sometimes it will stop other times not. If I turn it off then back on it will using stay off until I engage the pto. If I pull it apart to fix the brake should I replace all the wear items while I am in there? What all does that consist of?

Are you sure the the PTO is slipping? or is the slip clutch on the cutter slipping? Check that first. The brake action that you described would be normal for a 70 series pto with many hrs. on it. A phisical inspection of the pto plates and brake would be logical if you decide to tare it down. Post back.

It was definitely the pto slipping. As far as the cable was out of adjustment I am sure that was the problem for engagement. I was able to check the pressure this evening teed into the pto and it is arouund 180-200. had a crappy gauge so not sure. I started to drain transmission and oil is pretty black so will change. Will pull it apart tomorrow and see what it looks like.

I am also having problems with my PTO slipping and found similar pressure readings using new gauges. I rebuilt the clutch pack on my tractor several years ago but it began slipping when cutting hay the other day. Does anyone know how to raise the pressure applied to the PTO clutch? I hope your rebuild goes well. With a new brake your PTO will not 'free wheel' for a few years but it will return like an old friend.
