12 volt conv.

I read over on the Smith forum that if you convert from six to twelve volt you should use a true 12 volt coil so you get hotter spark. This is in contrast to a 6volt coil and dropping resistor. The latter is what I have. If I change to a 12v coil do I leave the resistor on, or take it off? Does it really make a significant difference to use the 12v coil?

A 6-Volt coil, running on 12-Volts with the proper resistor ahead of it, is capable of producing a very adequate spark.

12-Volt coils marked "use WITH an external resistor" are more or less 6-Volts coils.

If you get a TRUE 12-Volt coil, marked "NO external reistor required (such as a NAPA 14SB) youdo NOT need to use a ballast resistor ahead of it.

Either way, if you checked the primary current with the engine stopped, you should see a current in the 3-4 Amp range.

Any specific reason for changing over to 12V. A lot of people have done it, but the only good reason I can think of is if you need to run 12V accessories. I stuck with 6V on my 960. I"m actually putting in an optima 6V battery.

According to the coils i have sold you do not need an external resistor. The 12 volt coils have one built in and the manufacturers highly reccomend the coil instead of the resistor due to the increase in spark.
