1270 engine overhaul

I have a 1270 that needs overhauled. I am wanting to do it in frame. Can the oil pan be removed with the front axle in or do I need to support the tractor and remove the front axle? It looks like it would be a lot easier if the axle was removed. The engine has major blow by and I think it will take sleeves and pistons, can I pull the sleeves with the crank still in, if not then I might as well do an out of frame rebuild. Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks KMH

yes it can be inframed i do belive the frt axle has to come off though i did my 1070 inframe and didnt have to remove the frt end but it is a smaller tractor you can pull the liners without removing the crank

Thats what it looks like to me, take the axle out and the botton end would be fairly easy to access. The tractor is an early 1270, do you know what it takes to make it from 126 hp to 135 hp. If their are any updates that need to be done I would like to do them. Thanks KMH

I think the hp increase came from a rpm increase and maybe a fuel increase with the newer tractors. 135 hp will be no problem once it's overhauled.

You should be able to remove the oil pan with the axle on. You may need to remove the rear front axle support if the pan is going to hit it. You can replace the sleeves with the engine in the tractor. Buy a inframe engine kit. Sleeves, pistons, rod, main bearings gasket kit. Have your heads rebuilt. I would have the conn. rods checked out and rebushed and buy 6 new or rebuilt injectors.

I have done several 1270 overhauls. Take the front axle out and save yourself alot of grief. Make sure you shim the liners or you will waste alot of time.

I'm with Agri King, be sure you rebuild your heads and definely check your connecting rods for being out of round. You wouldn't want to spend all that $ and turn a rod bearing 200 hours later. I'm speaking from experience.

Thanks much for all the great reply's! I haden't thought about shimming the liners, would I get them from a machine shop or the same place I get the O.Haul kit? Do you guys have a preference on what brand of kit, I was thinking clevite form don's diesel. They sell one on this site also but a little more money. I haven't priced one from Case yet. I am taking the heads to a machine shop along with the rods. I am going to put new bolts in the rods also. Thanks, KMH
