140 question

I have a 1958 Farmall 140 that starts runs & operates very well, does not smoke or use oil but leaks a very little at the front & rear seals but when first started & the throttle is pushed up the oil pressure gage goes up about a third of the way & then over an hour or so it falls back to almost zero, does anyone have an ideal if it might be a bad gage or what else could it be ?

Start with a new gauge to confirm it, however its more then likely not the issue. It could be the oil pumps bottom flange, they are made of grey iron and have a tendency to warp over time. You can machine them flat this may raise your pressure. This will set you back 25 bucks 10 to have it machined and 5 for a oil pump gasket and 10 for a oil pan gasket. If this does not work then your rod and main bearings are worn and will need replacement, in that case your talking major tear down to get the crank out. As for the seals nothing you can do except replace them. Front one is fairly easy, rear requires a full split.

Oil pump pressure . Mine is a 1959 model tractor and the oil pressure does the same thing .When you first start it it is running about 30-40 lbs then after it has warmed up it drops to about 10 lbs ( almost nothing )
First I am using straight 30 wt oil , next oil change I am go to us a 10-30 or so modern oil.
I have worked that tractor in the garden and just watch it . I was told on here that as long as you have some pressure keep working her .

No need to machine. W/D sand paper on a sheet of glass some oil and a couple of minuets and it will be flat. Did it on my Super A.
