1460 Fuel Gage

We have a 1981 1460 with about 3500 hours on it, bought it last year, used it for one harvest of about 100 acres of wheat. Love the machine but the fuel gage has never worked, what is the easiest way to fix this? where is it located? any instruction would be helpful.

Sender unit has to be somewhere on the fuel tank. Usually you check out a sender by having the key on, and disconnect the wire at the sender, touch the wire to ground, and it should peg the needle. If not, maybe the gauge is bad, or the wire has a break in it. Check for a broken wire with a VOM set to continuity.

On my 1480 combines, the fuel sender is on the left rear portion of the tank and can be reached if the cover over the straw spreader gears is removed.
The advice about grounding the sender wire to test the guage and wiring is correct.
The guage just plugs into the insterment panel, remove the clear plastic plate, grip the guage by the plastic tabs and pull it right out of the mounting clips. Corrosion at the guage mounting clips is common, secondary is the gang plug on the bottom of the insturment panel and several wiring harness plugs under the insturment panel and above the fuel pump on the left rear corner.

The operators manual has good wiring diagrams with wire color codes.
