Is there any way to improve hay pickup on this baler? Baler pushes hay in front of pickup , but enough hay doesn't seem to reach the auger.

Sounds like your either using to high a gear on your tractor or you have something slipping in the pick up drive. I have used the old 14Ts for years and never had any pick up problems

Check that the pickup teeth aren't dragging on the ground and that they're not worn down too much. These old girls are fifty years old but they seem to go on forever with a little tlc.

If you have small windrows like me, you might need a small windrow hay compressor - the metal bars that go out in front of the pick up tines. I used a 14T that had the bars up high for big windrows and it pushed hay in front. My 24T has the curved compressor bars that go down in front of the tines and it worked great.

I have the same problem on both my 14's. If the windrow is medium to small in size or over dry the hay rolls over itself no matter how the pickup is set or what the ground speed is. The only time it doesn't is in a heavy alfalfa/mix crop or very stemy tall grass. I always wondered if it was my rake or raking. Anyway, I found a compressor like was described but didn't get it and now it's gone. I'm thinking that building one shouldn't be much of a problem as soon as I find out what type of steel ( spring steel or regular mild strap steel ) they were made of. Anyone know? ...Randy

A little strange looking aren't they. Look like they belong on a hay loader. I did the same to my 24T to handle short hay/straw and small windrows. Works pretty good.

Sounds like this baler is more trouble than it's worth.I want to bale hay,not do major fabrications. The thing is supposedly designed to pick up hay.why shouldn't it do that without optional attachments? There must be a design flaw somewhere. any guess as to what it might be?If the pickup tines were bent up a little at the tips would it make a difference do you think?

Have you had a lot of experience baling hay? Sounds like either your hay is WAY too dry or you're trying to bale something like lawn clippings. Never seen a baler yet that didn't work better with a decent size windrow......you kicking a bale out every 30 or 40 ft?

New to making hay.Grass was pretty short I guess. 20% moisture. it does bale wet hay better.Made a big windrow, tried different speeds and the hay just rolled in front of the baler. Left a big mess behind me,mishapened bales every 50-60 feet and lots of loose stuff on the ground. Bales would have been a lot closer together if all the hay was picked up,Was using a nh268 in rough shape ,and didn't have this problem.I guess I need more practice. Thanks for the input.

Did you lower the pick up as low as possible with out hitting the ground? We baled some pretty small light windrows and did not have the problem.

Yes ,tines 1 inch off the ground.I saw the compressor in the manual.Looks like it compresses the hay between that gadget and the pickup,so eventually hay has to get to the auger.I think it would be almost impossible to find one.Might be able to rig something.
