1550 ignition

Bought a 1550 gas late last fall.Runs like a clock. Got it out this spring to do a little work on it.I see it has pertronlc electroic ignition in a Holly distributor.A fter I got the hood off I see it has a 6 volt coil.Guy I got it from said he planted his corn last year with no problems. He did not put the ignition in it.Was that way when he got it.What do you think.Should I change the coil or just leave it alone.

My first instinct is to say if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but I'm the last person in the world that you should be taking advice from when it comes to anything electrical.

I'm kind of with rrlund, but I think would replace it with a correct 12v coil otherwise unballasted it's getting really hot. That was an original 12v tractor correct? It makes me just think it was a farmer fix to get back to work quickly...

Yes 12volt negative ground

I would say it would be worthwhile to give Pertronix a call and see what coil their tech help recommends, at least what ohmage your primary windings should have.
Using a coil with incorrect ohms could also shorten the life of the Pertronix module.
