1550 wont start

My 1550 decided that it does not want to start. I took the battery out and charged it and had it tested and its a good battery. I cleaned the terminals, put it back together, and it started fine. Now todays later it will not start again. Their is still charge in the battery because the lights still work. I can hear a buzzing in either the starter or solenoid. Could either of these be the problem?

Is the tractor a gas or Diesel? The starter could be binding up somewhere in the bell housing. Like it is about to engage or it wont retract and that would make a buzzing sound. Does it click when you try to start it or just make a buzzing sound?

The tractor is gas. It only makes the buzzing sound it does not click when I try to start it. I just put a brand new $78 Agco solenoid on it which did not help.

Mine has a bad habit of the starter locking up. I have to unbolt it from the bell housing and wiggle it to get the bendix to release.

Sounds like the battery is not fully charged. So a charging fault. Voltage regulator is a likely culprit.

Not to be funny but I taught a "fundamental" electrical class the first part of the week. We had a diesel pickup with new batteries and a new -not rebuilt starter. Same problems as you. But to check it out do like we did, get a voltmeter and see where you are with all this. We only had 8 volts at the starter ( bad connections) cleaned those had 12 but then only got 3 throught the new starter solenoid. Point being instead of guessing and spending money do some checks and see what is going on.The most common problems are still poor grounds/bad connections.

I am very confused! After checking everything that I could I switched batteries with my 770 just on a dumb thought. Now both tractors start fine. No corrosion, dirt, or even rust on any terminals or connections.

Listen to J Schweibert. You should do a voltage drop test. Just connect your volt meter across each connection and cable, try to start the engine. If you see more than .5 volts, you found a problem. When I say across I mean touch 1 probe of the meter to the pos cable, touch the other probe to the end of the pos cable. If there is resistance to electrical flow, it will try to go through the meter and it shows up as a voltage reading. Continue with each connection as described. Basic electrical testing will find this problem.

Glad you found your problem. My diesel got to where it wouldn't start this spring. I thought it was the starter. It checked out fine. I took the batteries out and found they were installed in 1995. I think I got the good out of them. Hope the new ones last that long.
