Would it be OK to use 15W-40 in an 8N sidemount? Motor is strong with only 100 hrs on a complete rebuild. Here in PA summer can be real hot and winter real cold and the tractor is used in both. Currently use SAE 30.

I would think it would be better than the 30 weight year round. It comes down to being all about the oil pressure. 15w40 will hold a more steady oil pressure when hot, and flow easier when cold compared to 30w.

Go for it. A local respected mechanic remarked that Rotella T was so good that it was too bad we couldn't drink it. A bit over the top, but point made.

FYI, I think JD 15-40 is made by Shell and is probably Rotella T. At least that is what the local Deere parts manager told me when I asked who made their motor oil.

I have been using 15-w40 for a few years, did use 20-w50 and read in an article at the API website that was backed up by research&shown on clear to understand even for Me.Turns out 20-w50 is fine in warm to hot conditions, but not so good in cold ones,15-w40 was much better for all year use.---lha
