15W40 engine oil use

Hi,

Just a quick note to enquire what you all use in your respective machine. Reason I am asking is I have a mixture of gas and diesel engined machines and was thinking of using just the one oil in all of them.
Two tractors - one gas and one diesel. Rider mower and snow blower both gas.

To make it easy I was wondering about using just the one oil for all machines. 15W40 summer and maybe 0W30 for winter - opinions please. Where I live it gets to -35C on winter and up to +35C summer.

Thx

J.

Whooops!,

I forgot to mention that the two vehicles I have (pickups) are both diesel and so is the JD450 I own.

The MF-65 tractor I have is a gas engined one.

So using just the one oil would help make things easier all around.

Thx.

J.

15-40 is a good all around oil to use but if it get"s that cold where you are I would go to a 5-20 or 5-30 in the winter.
I use 10-40 in all my tractors and have been using it for 35 years. Temp here might get to -18 below F for a few days. All seven Allis Chalmers{All 50+ years old} are still out working and never had an engine torn down due to an oil related failure.

Shell makes a good diesel oil. Rotella 15-40.
Can't see not using it in the tractor too..
I don't know if it is rated for -35c.
Call a diesel truck shop for some info on that low of a temp.

A note from Shell:

Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 (CI-4) would be a good cold weather choice for all 2006 and earlier models diesel engine pick-ups.

2007 and newer models that have a diesel particulate filter require a CJ-4 rated oil. We plan on introducing Rotella T Synthetic 5W-4 (CJ-4) in April or May. A CJ-4 oil is backwards compatible with CI-4 and earlier categories. Do not use a CI-4 rated oil in a 2007 and newer model that have a diesel particulate filter.

i have one oil and one only and it's 15-40 series 3 use it in every engine i have about 15 gas and diesel engines from the lawnmower to the 350 hp wheel loader run it year around in Wi. everything starts just fine in winter coldest was -21

I live in Western Montana and have seen it get down to -40F but it generally doesn"t last long.

I too have several tractors and I tried using 15W40 in my TO-30 because that"s what I use in my Ford 4610. It made it more difficult to start so I went back to 10W40 year round in the Ferguson. I beginning to think that I need to go to 10W30 or 10W40in my Ford because it"s really hard start in below 5F. Ford recommends 10W30 SAE grade below 0C down to -25C. They don"t have a recomendation for below 25C.

I feed big round bales so if the tractor doesn"t start, the cows don"t eat or I have to pitch hay into the pick up to feed "em!
if you have consistent weather at or below -35C, then perhaps 5W30 might be a better choice for you. You might do some esach on the web and/or get a recommendation from your nearest dealer.

Another note from Shell.
Looks like the 5-40 would be a good oil for you year round. Hope this helps you out.
From Shell Oil:

The second number in the multigrade designation is based on a viscosity at 212F. To be a SAE 40 weight the oil must have a viscosity between 12.5 and 16.2 centistokes at 212F. At 212 F a straight 40, a 15W-40 and a 5W-40 are all in the 12.5 to 16.2 viscosity range. Therefore, a 5W-40 is not a thinner oil at operating temperatures (approximately 212F). However, when you cool the oils the straight 40 will thicken the most, and the 5W-40 will thicken the least. This makes Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 a good year round oil in both hot and cold weather.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all of your replies. Seems the general concensus is that sticking to the one oil will work - which is what I thought. It will certainly make things a lot easier all around and I won't need to be concerned about mixing oils/brands.

I am in central BC, Canada and just about a month ago had a week of -35C temperatures. Not nromally that cold, but it does happen now and then. When it is that cold I don't go outside unless I absolutely have too :-)

Thanks again for your comments.
