165 I PTO Slipping

Using my MF 165 W/multipower for mowing today and when I got in heavy grass the pto stopped turning I have came to the conclusion that it is Independent PTO as you can engage the pto without using clutch at any speed with no grinding or effort. The pto will stop as the lever is moved forward and start when it is moved back. The multipower is working great with the change in speed as the lever is moved and the braking works in high range. I checked the tran/hyd fluid at the dipstick and it was way over full I drained and put it to the proper level. Fluid was very slightly milky but not worth changing. If the trans was over full could this have caused the problem. I have not rehooked the mower to see how it works. Is there a adjustment that needs to be checked to help identify if I still have a problem. I have looked in the archives without much luck Thanks

I would first be changing the "milky" oil, and cleaning the suction strainer, then try out the PTO again. If you still have problems, then you will need to check the clutch pressure at the PTO side cover. A small blanking plug can be removed, and a pressure gauge fitted. Have the transmission oil at operating temperature when checking. The pressure should be around 240 to 280 PSI, (depending on configuration of tractor), at 1800 RPM, for the cluch pack to operate correctly. If pressure is OK, the problem would be in the pack.

Gonna venture a guess here. As most folks do not intentionally overfill their oil, I would say that the additional volume is due to water displacement. My tractor had 15 gallons or so in the belly. 7 gallons was water, but the oil stayed on top. I would venture a guess that your hyd pump inlet filter is plugged with water/oil sludge. What do your shifter boots look like? How about the draft spring boot? I think the hyd pump inlet filter is serviceable (cleanable) but you would have to check with someone else on that as mine has no filter. BTW, I believe your multipower pump is mounted piggyback on the hyd pump and is therefore seperate in operation.

So that was the response from the peanut gallery, what say the professionals?

Hi all,
Indeed the condition of the oil could have a bearing on the IPTO slipping. For a sudden stoppage two other possibilities might be considered. Failure of the IPTO element of the pump, less likely, cracking/breakage of a supply pipe to the IPTO hub, more likely.
The filter for the IPTO/MP pump cannot normally be removed without first removing the hydraulic cover and then splitting the tractor behind the gearbox and centre housing. I would suggest the pressure test first. If this shows nothing the hyd cover should be removed and the filter visually inspected. The IPTO can be engaged but only at low engine speed unless you want a fountain of oil out of the Ferguson pump. You should be able to check the pipework and connections now. Let us know what you find.
