1650 Cockshutt

Our 4-H club is working on a 1650 cockshutt tractor. The past owner ran the transmission and rear end out of oil. We now have the rear gear and sleve on the pinion shaft ceased together, so now we are replacing the gear. The parts book shows a seal between the rear gear and the rear bearing. The one that we took apart did not have one and our local White mechanic says he does not ever recall a seal on the shaft. Can someone tell me if it needs a seal, or not?
Our 4-H members enjoy working on this project and any help would be greatly appreciated.

   The parts assembly from the 1650 shop manual does not show a seal behind the rear bearing.

   There isn't a need for a seal in that area.  The lube pump moves lube from the differential sump to the input shaft, thus it needs to flow back into the differential housing.  It flows through the bearing lubing it at the same time, a seal would prevent the bearing from getting lube.
