We have an Oliver 1650 diesel, lately when I start it we have full power and it runs fine, but anywhere from 2 minutes to 1hour it will lose power and completely shut down. After turning off key and restarting it will run fine again, but repeats the same. We've changed all fuel and air filter, drained water trap on bottom of fuel tank, but still the same problem. Any suggestions on this??? thanks

Try the simple things first.

Check for spark when it stops (don't turn off the key and energise starter from an alternative supply). No spark or weak yellow, it is probably ignition or switch. Strong blue spark but will not start - probably not ignition or switch. If weak or no spark, energise coil from alternative supply and check spark again to see if it is the switch at fault.

Drain carb - if little fuel and or not full flow for a minute or more it is probably fuel.

Fuel pump or gravity feed? If gravity, any extra filter after the sediment bowl may restrict the fuel, but not likely this unless you are only running it at idle for the hour it might run.
Diagnosis is much better than guessing.

Sounds like fuel related. May be water in bottom of carb?. May be something blocking tank outlet? May be a blocked filter on elbow into the carb?

Hope this helps.

Regards, RAB

Check the fuel return line to make sure it is not plugged. Someone had put a piece of brake hose in our 1650 and the hose was collapsing so tht fuel could not get through it. There is supposed to be a check valve in the fuel return line and it may be what is plugged.

Duh! you're right. Dumb oversight when they said water trap and turning off key.... In that case it's probably rubbish in tank? They don't have an electric shut-off solenoid on the pump do they?

our 1955 just done the same thing and it was the injection pump. normaly, if i would fix the most expensive thing first, id be time and money ahead.

You might have hit the nail on the head RAB . I read on one of the forums here about that driveing someone nuts ( and broke ;) ) . Turned out to be a small piece of leaf had gotten into the tank and floated around till it wrapped around the fuel inlet killing the engine . Then with no suction on the line it would float away and all was good till it did it again . Might be worth looking into the tank if possible with a flashlight . I know it's not possible on my 1755D due to the anti-splash ( or whatever it's called ) baffle in the neck . ...Randy

I had a 1750 doing somthing similar and it was the check valve in the return side of the pump it looks like a fitting on the pump that the return line that goes to the injectors hooks into I just dicarded it now tractor runs fine hope this helps

This can also be caused by plugged vent in fuel tank cap. When it loses power, unscrew the fuel cap and see if you get a rush of air into the tank. But I'd be more inclined to suspect the return line issues pointed out by others.

Just wanted to thank you all for all the replies I recieved, The problem was the check valve coming out of the injector pump. We just removed it for now, and it"s running fine. Thanks!!!!
