172 block question

I am in the process of rebuilding the engine on an 860. The problem is that the block looks as though it froze and pushed a good size piece out and someone welded it all back in, the weld piece is about a foot long piece by 2 inches wide. It is cracked next to the welded area the full length. The question is: the block casting # is EAF-6015-F and I found a good block that is EAF-6015-J. What is the differance between the two if any? Thanks for the help.

It will work. Ask for the oil pump and the plumbing and suction screen. There is a updated verion with that newer block and that stuff will not inter-change. If it takes a spin-on filter and you have the cartrigde type it will be differnt for sure.

Same block. The EAF indicates a '55-'57 172 block. The F and J suffix are just engineering indicators. There is some obscure engineering change between them, but nothing you'll ever notice and nothing that would affect a direct replacement. Later when they adopted the corporate part numbering system (B9NN for 1959 tractor C0NN for 1960 tractor, C3NN for 1963 tractor, etc)) the suffix was needed to identify the series whether it was 134 or 172 or whatever. In your case the F and J make no difference.

Hi John. The casting# on my original 1964 light industrial diesel block is CONN 6015 J. Am I missing something?

Thanks Foster
