The chain on my Homelite 27 AV saw takes little bites even when newly sharpened. The only identifier on the chain link says "33". I don"t know if that is the pitch are what. Question for you saw experts - can I replace this chain with a more heavy duty chain that takes bigger bites - maybe like a Stihl or Oregon chain same as long as same length? Don't have owners manual.

Check to see if the round top links (raker teeth) are lower than the cutting teeth. If they are too high they won't let it dig. Too low and you won't have enough power.

As long as it is the correct pitch, no. There are different styles (full chisel vs. safety or rip vs. crosscut) and different manufacturers will give you different lifespans, but in the long run, chain is chain.

Frank, knocking just a lil' bit off the top of those raker teeth (the straight links between the cutters) makes a huge difference in the size of the chip. knock a bit off each one and check it out before you buy a new chain- you may be very surprised!

don't take too much off- the chain may get so much bite that it will stall your saw

Hello Frank B.
Like fawteen said as long as the pitch is the same chain is chain.
The rake clearance is very important.
Buy the tool for the proper dept.
About $6 at sears. Make sure you check each tooth at the same spot on the chain for an even clearance all the way around.
guido.
