1800 A Engine Woes

Finally thought I was going to put the 1800 gas to work yesterday on a mower conditioner. This is the 1960 model my dad and grandad bought new in 61. After it warmed up the oil pressure dropped to almost nothing. I think it carried 5 lb at full throttle. The gauge is one Dad said they put on years ago. It is down on the right side of the engine. It would carry 30lb+ cold. Had some blowby but kept getting worse. I am not sure if it got a little noisy or not. Hard to tell over the exhaust noise. I have heard engines with rods knocking and it didn't make that sound. I will take a closer listen sometime. Anyhow I parked it. Sounds like main brgs shot to me unless someone else has a suggestion.

They had this tractor all during the 1960's. Dad said it was rebuilt once. Head milled and M&W pistons installed. Shows 4700 hrs with a working tach.

Don't push the panic button, but start looking for an old Freon Tank. Get a gallon of automatic transmission fluid as well. Do you have an air pressure regulator? If you have not drained the oil yet, save in all in a very clean container. Stay tuned for later developments this evening.

How much time do you have on this project? What was your first plan of attach? Remember this engine is not like an 88 in the fact that on the 1800 worn rod bearing do affect oil pressure. Maybe start with some plastigauge and see what kind of bearing clearances you have. If that looks good rig up the freon tank as a bearing leak detector and see where the oil runs the fastest. I also had to replace an oil pump on an 1800 A series one time because of a low oil pressure problem and they do not have a floating screen. Also remember it has the wide thrust bearing. I sent some of those thrust bearings to Rick's agriparts a couple of years ago. Don't know if Clevite has any left since Clevite aftermarket bearings has been sold since that time. J.

Check the pressure relief valve first as this is the simplest and possibly cheapest cure.
