I have a 1816B Case skidloader with a 16 HP Tecumseh engine in it.It will only idle if the choke is half out. It acts like it needs more gas, but it runs great under full load with no choke. When it idles it lope's and surges wildly without any choke. I have had the carb apart 4 times. All passeges appear to be open, float set properly and I have even open up the main jet a little bit.Still no change. Does anyone have a clue. Any help greatly appreiciated.

The throttle shaft that runs through the carburetor that holds the butterfly in place might have too much wear on each end. The engine will not idle if too much air comes in around that shaft. These are usually made from 1/4 inch brass rod which you can buy at your local welding supply. If your good at metal work and have the tools, you can make it. If not, it's to the parts store you go. It will make all the difference with the idle.---Derrol

Thanks Derrol, I forgot to mention earlier That I have put in a new throttle shaft and throttle door. The new shaft was to tight so I reemed the carb body to fit.

Just another guess, but check the govenor spring. Has it been replaced with a different spring with incorrect tension? Check the govenor linkage to the carburetor for lost motion, or incorrect arm position on govenor shaft or loose set screw on govenor arm/shaft. A partially sheared key in the flywheel/crankshaft can cause a lot of trouble causing a timing error. A piece of sheet metal falling back against the sparkplug wire at idle speed could be grounding a bare spot on the wire. A bad sparkplug or spark wire. Not enough clearance at the end of the Intake valve stem which would let compression come back to the carb at idle. A vaccuum leak somewhere on the intake. If this govenor is controled by air off of the flywheel,it may be sticking. I'm about out of ideas.---Derrol

it's the gas.
start using FRESH premium gas.Not out of the farm tank. There is not enough octane in regular any more to make things like that run. My lawn mower did the same thing. I use HI-Test in it now and it is just fine.

Yes, It can be the octane is missing from the gasoline. Ran on to that in Australia. The gas cap was missing from the tank in a car there. Would idle, but very shakey. The stick shift was shaking all over the place. We put premium gas in the tank and a new cap on the filler neck, it smoothed right out. The octane can evap out.---Derrol
