1850 speedometer gear

I have a 1967 1850 oliver with hydra-power. My question is with the speedometer gear in the tractor. The gear that the speedometer cable attaches to on the tractor is stripped out. The other gear on the tractor looks fine. I'm going to order a new one, but what would cause this. I don't want it to do it again. Anyone else had this happen before. Thanks for any advice.

Possibly moisture in the cable and it froze.

If I understand you correcly that is the little plastic gear. We used to stock them and sell like maybe one or two in a year.
