1855 no power = fuel pump. ???

Needs some help soon. 1855 diesel. No turbo, running other day it started to sputter like running out of fuel or plugging fuel filter. I got new filter. its full of fuel. I was running down road and it started sputtering again very bad and no power at all. I pulled it home and changed fuel filter again checked flow out of tank, all good. Still no difference. It starts right up each time like it should but then sputter and done. Any ideas would help. Im in a bit of a jam

We had similar symptoms, but no sputtering, on a Ford some years back. Turned out to be grass/hay in the tank. Ran all right for a while and would suddenly give out - just like operating the stop control - and always seemed sorted when the system was bled ... for a while.

It may be the governor weight retaining-ring in the injection pump has deteriorated. If you take the top cover off the pump and see little pieces of rubber floating around it will verify if the ring is bad.

My 1955 did the same thing. A diesel shop told me to loosen the inspection plate on the side of the pump. When you loosen the screws fuel will spray out relieving the pressure. And start running better. If it is the wear ring. Do not run like this very long. Just a test!! I had mine rebuilt with a replacement steel ring. I hope this will eliminate the problem for an extra 125.00. Good luck
