1855 still struggling

I pulled the return line off and there is some fuel coming out from the pump. The intake filter fitting broke as i was removing it but a got Another one it now. It still will fire right up each time but then falls off. The longer you let it sit the longer it runs good but now that is no more than a couple minutes. I guess the pump is going. I dont know the history on the pump. Tractor has 3800 total hours e but i was told that at about 3000 a new non turbo motor was put in it with all updates

Early 55 series tractors used the 2 paper fuel filters, later ones used the glass square type filter. which set up do you have? I don't think it is your pump. How much fuel pressure do you have at the pump inlet, at the port to check injection pump transfer pump pressure? I think you are starved for fuel.

Twice now since I bought that 1365,I've had to clean crud out of the shut off on the bottom of the tank. First time,it plugged entirely and killed the engine. I had to bleed the whole thing to get it started again. A few days ago it started acting up again. I took the line off and barely had anything coming out.

This has the glass square type. There is no transfer pump , all gravity. The flow at the pump is great. I dont believe these had transfer pumps. I did not see one in parts book. For the past three year it has ran great. Thanks or any and all input

Did you take the return line off at the top of the pump? Did you take the fitting out of the pump that the return line hooks to? That fitting between the pump housing and return has a glass check valve that can get stuck or plugged. WB<><.

I dont have a line wrench with me now. And can not get the fitting loose with a open end wrench. Im afraid i will round off i took the line off at the t near injector and fuel come out ok from the pump. Would this mean its clear. Thanks.

I've seen this happen at work. When the switch was made to ULSD fuel we would have problems as you describe. Us mechanics figured out if we packed snow around the injection pump we could get a hot machine fired up and on the lowboy for a ride back to the shop. It seems it was always the injection pump needed rebuilt. When yours is warm and dies cool off the pump and see what happens. They named the fuel u LSD for a reason !! Some one was on drugs dreaming that stuff up.

Along with what mechanic Fred asked, does it smoke when you try to start it hot? You said you had good fuel flow, Will it fill a 5 gallon bucket and have a good stream of flow the complete time? Put a gauge on the transfer pump port once and see what your reading is. Is your tank cap vented ?

Cap is vented. I dont have. Any gauges here at farm my shop is 2300 miles away. There is some smoke when it starts and runs now gray in color i have let the fuel run out quite z bit but not five gallons worth. Thanks. I am still trying

i am haveing the same problem with 1850 oliver
it has 354 perkins moter. i changed both fuel filers. and fuel lift pump . it cost 35.00 dollars . stell wount run more then 1200 rpm.
so i am stumped .

You might want to pull an injector or use a spare if you have one. Pull one line and connect the injector so you can see it pop off while the tractor is running. Can observe it until tractor stops.
I have a fuel can with a shut off on the bottom. Use it for a fuel source and plumb it into the injector pump inlet. I am very careful to keep my can dust and dirt free.
The third thing that has already been mentioned is to remove the fitting in the top of the pump cover and let tractor run.
Trying one or more of these ideas might help narrow down possible problems.

Do you see air bubbles in the glass filter? I have had rubber feul lines collapse on things before, not sure if your 1855 has any on it but might be something to consider.

Take the vented cap off and run the tractor till hot. Then, shut tractor off and try starting it with gas cap still off. The cap could be plugged up which would create a vacuum by not allowing air to go in the top of tank while fuel is going out the bottom.

Just a guess

did you just change that glass fuel filter? If so did they give you the right 1. Those are made with 5 or 10 micron filter paper. The 5 micron is made to have a pump push fuel thru it, the 10 micron are for gravity systems. With a 5 micron filter on a gravity system, I have seen those do the same thing you describe, might be a place to look.

with the tractor runnng loosen the the two screws that hold the timing cover on the injection pump, loosen them just enough for the fuel to leak out , if the tractor keeps running tighten them back up the motor should die out the pump is shot if this works

I agree the problem could be the fuel itself... I have seen this happen on a number of different tractors of all different makes and just dealt with it on a 4020... There is very little lubrication and detergent to the the fuel.... The best cure I have found is to mix it with some basic ATF. The 4020 I dealt with last week would run... but she wouldnt pull... or wind up past about 1500.... and when she got warm, it wouldnt start after it was shut off... I dumped a 2 and a half gallon jug of ATF in the tank...and left her sit and run a couple hours... Then she ran!!! The guy said it ran like a whole new tractor and has never pulled like that in years! I run a gallon of ATF per 20 gallons of fuel in all my diesel tractors just to help keep everything lubed and clean... just my humble opinion... but it might be worth a shot before you yank that pump..
