1929 John Deere GP

I have a 1929 John Deere GP tractor and was trying to find out what the attached picture is and what does it do.

Thanks. Just purchased the tractor and trying to find out what the picture is. It appears to be some type of reservoir. Did try to report to moderator.

Don't know what you are questioning, but if it is a separate small tank it is probably for gasoline to start the engine with. The engine was designed to burn kerosene, but it would start easier with gas. When the engine warmed up a bit, then it was switched over to run off the tank of kerosene.

Dad had one that he hated. It was the first tractor to go when new tractors became available after WWII - and the 3 old D's left as soon as he could get other new tractors that were on allocation.

If you are referring to the small tank on back of fuel tank, it is fur gasoline to start on when using tractor fuel.
If its the round tank on top of engine and has a big wing nut on the top its the oil filter or me thinks they called them oil screens.

I own a 34 GP. They never had a separate round gas starting tank, the two compartment tank was under the hood. The only tank looking thing I can think of is the air cleaner housing under the fan shaft, later GP's had an upright air cleaner. Pics would sure help

It's a cleanable oil filter/screen.

The early "D's" used them as well.

I used to have a "D" with one, in the 70's.

I can't remember the exact details, you turn/twist/unscrew the "T" handle, and maybe lift it as well and it scrapes debris/sludge off of the screen.

Can't remember if there's a way to drain of the mess, at that time.

DEERE has most parts catalogs available to view or download on the "www.jdparts.com" website, but they don't seem to have the one available for the "GP".

I didn't think the 29 had that filter assembly on it yet. The little button sticking up on the back of it is a pressure gage, It should rise up when the engine has built pressure. Good news is cartridge filter used on the A will fit in there and work. Does your 29 have the side exhaust and air filter under the hood?

My 34 has the upright air cleaner and exhaust plus the filter.

This is a 29, no filter, side exhaust, and the air cleaner housing is under the fan shaft

It has the side manifold and the air cleaner is under the hood serial # shows a 29 model

Nice looking GP's. What width are the rear rims and what tire size is on the 1929. I have a set of cutoffs to put on my 1931 GP and am not sure what size tires to put on them. Thanks for the pics.

12.4-24 never measured the rims but i think they are 10"
