I was having trouble with water in my oil so I found the tubes were bad and replaced them and solved that problem. This is a fresh restore and it ran great prior to changing the tubes now it will not run right I must have the valves out somehow it coughs and smokes when it does start. How can I get these valves right. Ihave them set at 30 they was looser so I adjusted down to 30. Any Ideas???? Help

Re-check them after you start it next time, let it run a few minutes. It MIGHT be happier @ .022. Just a thot. HTH

It seems to run okay for a minute and then starts getting rough and then backfireing then it dies. All i realy did is change the tubes and put on a new JD head gasket. Do you thing the new Head Gasket failed? Or do the Valves expand that much in that short of time to close down the gap to much. Hate to pull it back apart again. Thanks for all the help...

As long as you have any valve clearence, it will not cause your B to run a short time then quit and the head gasket won"t act that way either. Sounds like you have restricted fuel flow to the carburetor. You may have spark failure, but I"d check fuel flow through the float bowl first. Put a pan under the carb and open the bowl drain. Let it drain with the fuel turned on, if it doesn't continue with a constant stream of gas for a few minutes, you have fuel blockage.

You didn't tell us if the fuel is fresh, or if the tractor has been idle for quite a spell - I am in agreement with Larry - I think you have fuel and/or carby problems!

An engine will run for a short while and then die when the fuel supply is blocked or limited. Do some more investigation before taking the engine apart!!! (PatB)

Rick - He needs to check for presence of spark as the tractor kills before opening u the magneto.

This owner has some troubleshooting to do and so far as I see - he hasn't started doing it yet! (PatB)

I have good spark all the time. It is wetting the plugs with gas. I don't have any water in the oil. The only thing I have not been able to check is the compression I need to make a adapter for my tester. If it was just running out of fuel why would it backfire? It runs good for about 1 minunte then starts coughing then smokes a littls lets out a couple loud backfires and then quits. Remeber it ran perfect a week ago I just changed the tubes and manifold gasket. I will double check the fuel again because I did have to take the carb off to do this work.
Thanks for all the help and replys.I really do appreciate it.

I would second the fuel issue. Make sure you have a good flow of fuel out of the bottom of he carb. If there isn't a good flow then make sure the gas cap has created a vacuum on the tank.

Hey you guys were right I did not have a good fuel flow Got that fixed and its a runnin!!! One othe question I have always had GP's so I'm not sure how much oil is to run in the drough above the rockers and valves is it full pressure or just a trickle. It seems kind of week but maybe I have not run it long enough to get a good flow.

Thanks Again
