1937 A Unstyled Piston rings ?

Original piston/ rings for an A Unstyled SN 453655 have

4 compression rings
1 oil ring

5 rings on each, is this correct?
or is the top ring slot used as a carbon build up ring and should be left blank?

Generally the top groove of all fuel pistons was a carbon groove and you do not need to clean it out. It should be narrower then the rest.

I removed the top ring that was in the first ring groove. These pistons were found with
4 compression
1 oil.

Mike M, I agree with you and have heard the top groove was for carbon. Not sure if they added a ring at one time or what.

That tractor appears and said to be original build. Want to know if early unstyled A's had 5 rings on each piston.

That sure does look like a ring groove because it is so wide !

Maybe the early ones didn't have a carbon groove ?

Does the parts book say anything about how many rings came in the standard kit ?

My parts book is extremely old but it looks like
PN: AA 2047R RING PISTON STD 8 COMP 2 OIL CONTROL.
(The 8 looks like a dang 6 though!)

Awfull faded and greased up.
Can anybody verify.

It makes sense as an 8 because you have 4 on each and 1 oil on each. Which surly looks correct for what your pistons are made like.

All of them must not of had a carbon groove ? Maybe something added later after trial and error ?

It's been many many years since I had an unstyled A apart ! I did do a really early one for a fellow years ago too. But sure don't remember any of it.

I wish I had a good service manual for the unstyled. I got a parts book which seems good for seeing all the diagrams however it would be nice for me to buy a service book (SM2000?) I believe.

For the early unstyled what is everyones go to book for service. ??

The pistons have 4 compression and 1 oil control ring. Do not be led astray by pictures in the parts book, PC674, sometimes they can be deceptive. PC674 is a latest version, superseded parts book from 1960. Many of the things listed and pictured are not period correct (especially wheel equipment).
There is no true "shop manual" for many of the early, letter series tractors. SM 2004 is for styled B but is considered the shop manual for all of them, in general. DIR-103 is the operators manual for unstyled A. Other helpful manuals are; SM 2000,Tractors and Engines; SM 2029,Electrical Systems; SM 2024,Carburetors; SM 2011,Hydraulic Equipment. You can purchase "reprint" manuals on ebay, that will be period correct, and show more appropriately, the period correct parts. You can download parts books from JD website for free, maybe others. CAT-45 is a period correct parts book for all JD tractors and engines from 1936.
Hope this helps you some.
