1938 M CRAWLER MOTOR

I HAVE A 1938 M CRAWLER THAT I'M REBUILDING THE QUESTION I HAVE IS THE MOTOR. AFTER CLEANING THE BLOCK I FOUND A CRACK BETWEEN THE NUMBER THREE AND FOUR CYLINDERS. HEAD GASKET COVERS IT GOOD. IS THIS SOMETHING I SHOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT AND IF SO WHAT IS A GOOD FIX. ALSO NEED SOME IDEAS ON THE SLEEVES WOULD IT BE WISE TO LEAVE THEM ALONE AND NOT PULL THEM AND INSTALL NEW O-RINGS ???? THEY HAVE NOT BEEN LEAKING SO IS IT BETTER TO LEAVE THEM AS THEY ARE. OTHERWISE THE BLOCK IS GOOD.

The cracks between the sleeves are pretty common and usually not a concern. As far as the sleeves, I would think that as long as you are that far in you might want to press them out and put new o-rings on, you will kick yourself if you put it back together and it starts leaking.

APPRECIATE THE HEADS UP. WHERE CAN I GET O-RINGS? AND WHEN I PULL THE SLEEVES DO I HAVE TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE CRACK BETWEEN THE SLEEVES ? ANY ADVICE TO GET THEM OUT.

TAKE CARE AND HAVE A NICE SPRING DAY

Norm Meinert, Davis IL 815-238-4506, should have the parts you need for a UM motor. You can drive the sleeves out but if your concerned about the cracks you should have them pressed out.

APPRECIATE YOU GETTING BACK WITH ME. DO YOU KNOW OF ANYONE WHO COULD PRESS THESE OUT FOR ME THAT HAS WORKED ON M MOTORS AND AROUND THESE CRACKS? ONLY HAVE ONE BETWEEN 3 AND 4 CYLINDERS.

Get the parts from Norm Meinert he will sell you everything you need for the U/M motor,as for removing the sleeves a good quality sleeve puller will do the job easily if you are worried about the block use a couple of large washeres and spacers to hold the others untill you are ready to pull sleeves,i have rebuilt many of these engines and have never yet seen one that is NOT cracked at the top between sleeves as long as the bore where the sleeve seals is not cracked then you wont have a problem. The head gasket will seal the block, best to pull sleeves whilst motor is still on tractor or it will flop about all over the place when you tighten sleeve puller.

HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO MINNESOTA ?// IF THE DISTANCE ISN'T TO GREAT I WOULD TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT PULLING THE SLEEVES AND INSTALLING THE O-RINGS.

TAKE CARE AND HAVE A GREAT DAY
