1939 9N Colors

I bought a plow today from a guy that had what appeared to be a 1939 9N in light grey and red.

There is a Ford badge on the front grill with a tin plate "Ferguson Systems" just below.

Looking to know where can I locate a serial number to help identify this tractor.

He converted it to 12 volt and to be honest the alternator looked out of place.

He is going to let me take a closer look when I want.

It was raining very hard, we were both wet and the photo I posted is what I recall seeing in that implement shed except unrestored.

Hopefully my camera works when I go back.

Weren't they called Ford Ferguson in that year?

The serial number is on the left side of the engine block on a flat spot.

Usually you have to wire brush it and use a bright light at many angles to read it.

Since it is repainted you may have to scrape paint off.

Those look like the Ford colors that Rustoleum sells in their Farm and Implement paint.

So you could probably get that red and paint back over it if you like.

Thats not the tractor I looked at, sorry for the confusion.

That photo is of one similar to what I saw.

The wheels and toolbox I rember.

He also had a grey one someone had tore apart I have to investigate.

That sure looks nice!

Many 9ns, 2ns, and 8ns, today, are an assortment of parts that, aren't original to the the tractor. Parts may have come from their older, or younger brothers, in order to keep it running.
Parts from 39 9N may fit on a 52 8n, and visa vera.
Folks paint whatever colors they happen to like. 39 9n was grey.
Low 9n serial number parts are more valuable, and hard to find, than newer parts.

well 9Ns and 2Ns were grey in the cheapest dark grey of the week during any given time however during the 8N red belly and ford blue era most of em ended up red bellies or blue bellys. The dealership would re-paint them and sell them as 8Ns for more value and now most get restored that way.

I myself will never repaint my 9N it just has too much history, its been grey, red belly, and blue belly, all blue with red rims and orange stripes, beige and has all the colours layered up. it looks better in a whole artists cabinet of different colours then one solid colour (in my opinion)

As soaked said most paint them any colour they like even John Deere green and yellow. all up to preference

Good explaination as to why the colors I am seeing don't match information posted on sites like wikipedia.

Ford does have a dove grey that gets my vote.

Here are four early 9N,s The one on the far right is a 1940. There others are all 39s.

As noted above, 9N and 2N tractors were "gray" from the factory. 8Ns were red and a lighter shade of gray (chosen to better hide bird poop!).

My 1950 8N was blue and gray when I bought it in 2001, obviously repainted to look more contemporary to the later blue/gray paint scheme. When I stripped it bare, there were at least five layers of (mostly house) paint. I went back with the factory paint scheme, then farmed with the tractor (mostly alfalfa hay small squares) until I retired.

The tractor was always shedded at our former IL farm, but it has to sit in the driveway these days at our TN retirement home. The sun and weather have not been kind to the paint!

Bottom line, original for a 9N was a darker, 'battleship' gray, but if you buy it, it's yours and you can paint it any color that suits your fancy.
