1940A w cracked head

Hi all I pulled the head off a 1940 hand start gas burnin A to find the head had a weld in the power crater if you will and I've heard folks talk about unwelded heads like uncut hoods. WAs this very common that heads cracked since theres no water pump?? my welder nomaly does tugboat fixes and is'nt use to heads this small. do welds normaly hold up I priced one at yard for 200. thats not going to happen. Any tricks i should know about.. thanks again as always tugboat tim

There used to be a place in Nevada, Iowa called "Williams Cylinder Head" that welded cracked heads for years. As far as I know they held as good as new. I heard recently that Arnold Motors bought them out. I would assume that they kept most of the old staff. I can't give you a number, but maybe you could google it if you wanted their opinion.

I've had good luck with interlocking tapered cast iron threaded plugs, but if it's been welded once it may not be able to be fixed. $200 doesn't sound too bad for a good head, but you may be able to find one cheaper. I would suggest that you have the manifold and the manifold gasket surface re-machined. That is a common failure point on these old tractors.
