1944 JD A

Have a JD 44 A hand start with a tick or ratchet sound in the pto. I have replaced the outside bearing and both oil seals thinking the bearing was the noise. Nothing has changed. The tick speed is related to the speed of the pto shaft and does it worse when the clutch is fully engaged. After several minutes the tick fades and when the hydro pump is warmed goes away. Pump gears look really good. Any advice would be helpful.

I think every A,B that I own or owned made ratcheting ? noise in the pump when first turned on until it cycled a few times.

Another thing I thought of was the 90W oil in the trans acting like glue (when cold) to hold the inner oil seal and spring, the pump gears then turn with the shaft while the spring sits still, the springs cut end clicks on the keyway cut outs on the pump gear until the 90W warms up to free up the seal and spring which should turn with the shaft????

My 44B does that too, was wondering the same thing. Glad its nothing to worry about, thought related to cold operation. Glad somebody asked. Thanks

That's a plausable cause in my opinon. I've got both a 39 B and a 44 A but can't say that I've ever noticed the noise talked about here, but I will be paying more attention from now on!!
