1946 JD model D voltage question

From what i can tell in my books it should be a 6 volt system from the factory. Many were converted 12 volt by using parts from later model tractors. You should be able to look at the voltage regulater or the generator tags they should indicate the voltage on them, if not get the part number and match it at a dealer.

The best I can tell from SM 2029 is there was a SN break at 186752 (on generators) which GUESS ONLY is when they went to 12 volts??? making yours a 6 volt. I can tell ya this, if you wanna start a D with 6 volts in the winter, you best have the absolute biggest heaviest highest Amp Hr or CCA battery that you can physically fit PLUS use good 00 Gauge battery n starter n ground cables, NO Wally world or light gauge cables

Why switch to 12V ? All styled Ds with electric start were 12V !! A parts catalog would show and tell you that! Only Ds with with 6V were those with a 6V lighting package of generator, battery, and 6V lights but hand crank flywheel. Same setup for a 12V lighting package with hand crank flywheel. There were two different 12V starters used on Ds with later one using a hand lever on side of battery box and rod connected to switch on starter while earlier ones used a solenoid type and pull switch on dash but all were 12V starters on Ds.
