1947 RTU Fan Hub

JS BOATS

We bought this R last year and I noticed the fan felt a little loose but thought it was'nt that bad. When I put it away for winter storage the fan hub started to squeal really loud,I shut it off and pushed it in the shed.I now have an operators manual and parts book. The book says to fill the hub half full of oil in the plug.In the plug hole you can see a brass sleeve. The fan spindle is stationary. How does the oil get between the spindle and sleeve? Thank You

The bushing is semi-porous. its called Oilite, the oil wicks through it when its warm. I am thinking either 20wt or regular 30 wt engine oil.

You say its loose. If you replace the bushing, be sure the replacement is porous too.

I have also seen them with a hole drilled through through the bushing through the fill plug hole and a grease fitting installed. If you do this, you will have to grease it regularly.

I have also seen them where the bushing was very worn with the bushing bored and thinner bushings about 1" long pressed into either end. If you do this you will have to drill the grease hole and lube it that way. Pressing the bushing in will probably close up most of the oil pores in the brass.

Thanks for the info TRK.I was concerned that the oil in the hub would make a mess, the brass bushing being porous makes sense.I'll call and see if Ohda has one in Walnut and compare it to a new one.
