1948 Model A Running Issue

48 Model A

New User
I have inherited a 1948 Model A John Deere and I am currently trying to figure out a couple issues with it. The biggest issue right now is the running problem, I have adjusted all the throttle, gov. and carb linkages to the specs in the shop manual. When it starts it will idle, but as soon as you crack the throttle open it will run wide open right away there is no in between like the governor is not responding and holding it at a certain RPM, any responses or help would be great!

Thanks, Garrett

check your cotter pins sounds like one is a little off and getting caught on something not letting the throttle to come back where it belongs

Also, Unhook the hand throttle to the Governor Rod. Start tractor. If problem is still there hook hand throttle rod back up. Unhook the throttle rod from carb at the governor or carb , Restart tractor if problem is still there then problem is in Governor. OH ya when you unhook throttle linkage from carb or governor and you restart tractor make sure you are hanging on to the throttle at the carb, If you don't. Wide Open Throttle WILL happen as the motor starts it will Pull the Throttle Wide OPEN....Good Luck Post back and let us know what you find...

Ok, thank you I will try to check that all out in the next day or 2 after work and everything. Dont worry I will keep you updated on what happens, I", hoping I can get this thing running correctly it was my great grandfathers and I got it when he died, I love these tractors there is nothing that sounds like it ! haha

Tell us how you adjuted the linkage? I had a problem with how the shop manual describes the procedure. In the book it says with throttle wide open adjust linkage to half a hole short of hole in butterfly valve with that plate wide open.
My A did not like it, so I set it to half a hole short with the butterfly in the closed position and it ran fine like it should.

I have adjusted all the linkage according to the shop manual by I&T..

I did have a question.. if anyone can answer I have the governor out right now and and am a bit confused.. Where exactly do the weights ride? Are the fingers on the weights supposed to ride behind everything on the shaft next to the fan drive gear... or are they supposed to ride in the groove on the piece behind the thrust bearing? As they are now, they are between the fan drive gear and behind all the pieces on the shaft.. It just seems that this would render them useless? Being this is the first time I had this apart I dont know who else has been in there and what they have done?
