I have a 1949 Dodge 1 ton, Serial# 81271204 Model# B-1D126. The engine is locked up from 35 years of water down the open spark plug holes. Just wondering what engine to be on the look out for that might make a easy swap, (if there is such a thing.)Doesn't even have to be a Dodge engine. My father told me there were some 6 cly. Ford engines that might fit the stickshift transmission with light modification, but he wasn't positive. any info would be a great help! Thanks, Todd

A ford flat-head 6 will not go into the Dodge WITHOUT bunch of work. For the easiest repairs you need to look for anther Flathead 6 Dodge engine. There were many Flathead 6 dodge engine built for fork lift, farm tractors and power unit used. I think there were also MANY variations. My Brother bought a 1952 1/2 ton Dodge with a flat 6 and a fluid drive three speed in it. We took that engine out and install the original 5.7 liter Hemi in it. One of the MANY wrinkle we had to overcome was the brake master cylinder was mounted on the bell housing area of the flat 6's block.
If you do not know what the original 5.7 liter Hemi is, it is a 1957 DeSoto 341.

Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler, DeSoto - from 1936 to 1959 were almost identical. The Chryslers were larger cubic inch and had longer blocks. Just about any of these is a bolt-in.

One thing that varies on those old engines is the plate on the front of the engine that sets on the motor mount. There is about 2 inches difference.They can be switched. Just something to be aware of. RW

Hi Todd;

I just know saw your post. The original motor in that truck is a 230 cu. inch Dodge or a 218 cu. inch. The 1/2 and 3/4 ton had the 218. I think the 1 ton had the 230. In 51 or 52 Dodge put the 237 cu. inch in the 1 ton. That was the Desoto motor, it is 2 inches longer. The 218 and 230 were Plymouth, Dodge motors. The long blocks were 237, 250 and 264 cu. inches. The short block was 23 inches long on the head, the long block was 25 inches. Every thing is about the same on all of them axcept for the front motor mount. There is a plate that bolts to the front of the block, that is the motor mount. On the bottom of that is another piece and the two are fitted together with a strip of rubber that is the vibration damper. there are two L bracketts with holes that bolt to the front cross member of the frame. On the short block they face forward, on the long block they face back under the block. Might be the mounting plate is reversival on the front of the block, face either direction. I don't know, I never tried it. My dad told me the long block would fit in, you had to move the radiater ahead 2 inches. The truck radiater mounting channell has 2 sets of mountng holes, the front is 2 inches ahead. All of the sixes have the same bolts on the back for the bell housing. The rear motor mounts bolt on the side of the bell housing.

Hope this helps.

Charley.
