1949 John Deere A Steering sector gear.

I removed mine by taking the nut off the top of the sector. Then slowley jack up the front of the Tractor and the tapered/splined shaft will pull down. You can then pull the sector gear out. Worked for me.
 
I loosened the nut, put pressure under the gear with a bar, then smacked the nut with a 3lb hammer.Came right loose.
 
i use an old wrist pin that fits over the threaded part of the shaft and inside the gear dont brake or bend anything this way
