1950 Allis-Chalmers CA maintenance help needed

Hello,

My father owned a 1950 Allis-Chalmers CA (model S) tractor but he recently died and now I am responsible for its care and use (mainly plowing the long driveway for my mom in the winter). I know very little about tractors and could use a great deal of help from you knowledgeable folks.

#1) I know I need to change the oil. The filter info: AGCO 70240912 (I checked the ytmag.com site and this appears to cost around $17 or so).
COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT TYPE/WEIGHT (EVEN BRAND) OF OIL NEEDS TO BE USED AND HOW MANY QUARTS? [is regular automobile oil safe/recommended]? I have very little information on hand about the tractor.
ANY HELP, TIPS, OR SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Incidentally, before my dad died he told me that the tractor needed the clutch replaced. I had a tractor shop do the job and I felt that I was way overcharged for the work. Anyway, now I need to do other maintenance and am unsure if I should ever go back to them despite the fact that they have expertise in this field as well as most of the parts/supplies that I will likely need.

I hope to hear back from someone regarding my oil questions. Thanks in advance!

Since you are using the tractor all year a 10-30 motor oil will work fine.
You can get a Fram filter for around $6.00. I'm not at the farm to check but I believe the Fram # is 159.
You will find that AGCO prices are VERY HIGH!!!!

Where in NY are you?

Hi Jeff Z.

Thanks for the reply!

So any (good brand of) 10W-30 motor oil should work fine?

When you get a chance could you double check at the farm and reply with the FRAM# I should use (in case #159 is not correct... not sure if an auto store would be able to cross-reference with the AGCO filter).

I"m in Orange County NY, near Middletown.

*By the way, my late father also owned a 1948/49 Ford 8N tractor (very good condition with york rake) and an INTERNATIONAL 444 BACKHOE (older not sure of year - that"s in Sullivan county - has some sort of clutch problem). If you or anyone you know would be interested in buying these (or possibly could fix the 444 at a reasonable fee) please let me know.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR REPLY... I HOPE TO HEAR BACK FROM YOU.

Fram # is C-159. Check Tractor Supply if you have one near by. They keep them in stock.

Good stock car racing down your way.
Have you ever gone over to see OCC Choppers?

I'm up near Albany in Averill Park.
Good stock car racing up here too at Lebanon Valley, Fonda, and Albany Saratoga.

Hi Jeff Z,

Thanks for checking on the oil filter number (Fram# C-159). Yes, we have a Tractor supply store about 10 minutes away! I'll definitely go there later and get that filter.

Yes, I have been to the original OCC store. I haven't been to their new headquarters though. I actually had dealings with the head of their marketing in the past and they sent me some free samples!

Yeah, stock car racing is pretty popular around here with us having the OCFS track.

I noticed you've posted quite a lot of replies here at this site... I think that's awesome of you to share your knowledge of tractors and try to help people out! You definitely helped me. THANK YOU!!!

I'm sure I'll be posting other questions soon... I hope you (or others here) will be able to help advise me. It's difficult when you have no experience with tractors.

Thanks again!

Just wanted to let you know every time you start the engine make sure you got oil pressure. Always check that gauge.

Thanks again Jeff Z!

I'll make sure to keep an eye on the oil pressure.
Best of luck to your friend who's racing this weekend!

I will probably e-mail you in the future (and post questions here) when I get in a jam with the tractor. Thanks again for your help!

Get the operator manual for the tractor to learn about lube requirements, maintenance intervals, basic operating controls, etc. For service work- ie, repairing the tractor, get the I&T AC-11 manual.

Hi JMS/.MN,

Just wanted to say thanks for the suggestion to get the manual. I looked around through all of my dad's old manuals and was actually able to find the one for the CA, so I'm very pleased. Thanks again for your comments!
