I got my newly aquired 1950 running on Saturday.
Runs well. Everything except the fuel gauge and lights work!! What is the best oil to use in the 4-53 GM?? Anyone have a part number for thee oil filter?? The low idle is 850 rpm is that correct or on the high side? The power steering sure is nice!!

If it were me, I just run a good multi weight diesel oil. When I had my trucks, I always ran Mobile Delvac. Pull the pan off, stand it up on edge, and the oil would wash the inside of the pan clean as it ran down.

Does the oil or engine manufacturer recommend a multi-weight in this engine?

40 wt. low ash do not put a multi viscosity in a detroit. your supplier may have a "house" brand that would be cheaper. last bit of advice on operating a detroit: drive it like you just slammed your finger in the door!

I have always run Delo 100 40W in all my 2-cycle GM/Detroits. This is a low ash product and is recommended specifically for these engines.

SAE 30. 500 rpm or at least thats what my detroit manual says. I have 1900 oliver with a 4-53 and I get filters I get at napa. Keep an eye on the blower. If she starts blowin blue, its time to change the seals on the blower. Don't let it sit around to long either. Those detroits love to work and are a long life engines. The 4-53 in my 1900 was rebuilt 20+years ago and is still going strong. Just have fun and let that 4-53 scream to her hearts content.

My Detroit Diesel owners manual recommends the use of 30W or 40W but 15W-40 is also recommended to be used for easier starting in colder climates. But, around here it does stay that cold for long anyway so I run 30W in all of my Detroits.

In 1968, the Detroit diesel people told me to run 40 wt. I ran 40wt until they told me to go to 10-40wt. That was in 1978 when I bought a new crate OO 92. these were all 2 strokes. I ran coast to coast then, and racked up a lot of miles. I never had a 4 stroke Detroit.

Thanks for all the replies. I will go with the straight SAE 40 as it will not be used in cold weather and it does have a block heater. It is a 1966 and is Red with white grill and trim on front and back of the fender tanks. The air cleaner pipes are galvanized not painted.
How heavy are the 6262A round rear wheel weights?? I have 3 on each side.
