1950 JD dash

I am traveling and don't have my books, and met a guy with a 1950 JD B. It has three gauges and a 3/4 inch hole on the upper right side of the dash. It is driving him crazy to know what the hole is for.

Can anyone help me solve this for him?

thanks in advance

On the 50 B it should not have had a shutter hole on it. On the older B's there was a shutter control that was a wing-type of handle that you turned, unlike the later ones that were mounted on the steering column, and that hole was on the bottom right. So if there is a hole that size on the bottom right, it must have been for ignition. We had a B like that but it had a mag and no key switch. My 50 A has an ignition switch on the bottom right of dash, about where you say it is located, with the three gauges in a vertical line in center and light switch under them. The 50 B may have same arrangement.

I think the 1950 "B" would have been factory equipped with a magneto. Somewhere along the line if it was changed to a distributor ignition, and a key switch was installed, the hole was made wherever the installer deemed it to be convenient.
